No, PriusChat runs on a commercial server, and is running commercial BBS code. You are way off base on this one.

So the Priuschat owners are paying for the site to be hosted? If that's the case I'd find a new hosting company. If a commercial company is hosting it why are the Admin's talking about upgrading the servers and trying to figure out how to configure Apache? Why wouldn't the commercial hosting company (as experts) take care of it?

So are the Priuschat owners able to configure the code at all? Or do they just receive upgrades now and again.

    Danny,

First of all, the pages seem to load just fine (at least I haven't seen any issues today.) Thanks for all the hard work.

However, I do notice that when I go to Toyota Prius Online Community with News, Forums, & Research - PriusChat, there's no link on the site's menu bar for the forums. To get here I either have to type a the direct url www.priuschat.com/forums (not a big deal) or sort or kludge around doing something like choosing "View New Posts" to get into the Forum and then navigating back up to the top.

I'm sure that there are bigger fish to fry, but you might want to make a note of this one somewhere.

It keeps you logged-in until you hit the "Log Out" link. If you don't use "Remember Me" I think the site only keeps you logged in for 30 minutes from the time of your last activity.

I felt like zinging someone today, so I was glad to do it :)

PriusChat is running on a dual Xeon, Quad Core dedicated server with 4GB of RAM. We can't run on a shared server or even a VPS server because the site's number of visitors would probably melt the machine in about 5 minutes . Unfortunately this setup costs way more than $50 /month and even though I have a server admin to perform certain activities on the server, it's not like we have the resources of a large company at our disposal. There's me... and... oh yeah, me. And anyone who is nice enough to take the time to lend their talents to the site. Maybe one day PC will have tens of thousands of dollars a month to put toward server resources, but right now I don't.

I've learned a lot about servers and software configurations over the last few years, but I look forward to the day when I can hand it all to someone else to worry about and just let me work on the damned site.

Evan, thanks for your feedback regarding the load times. I'm going to get that calculation set back up on the bottom right to show server load and page load times. The bottleneck for me with loading pages has been my browser, so I've been happy so far.

    :hail: Yahooapis.com . . . THAT'S THE TICKET!!! :)

My problems with the new server/software seems to have disappeared after I allowed PriusChat to serve up yahooapis.com scripts on my computer.

For added web safety, I run the NoScript add-on in Firefox.
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

. . . I'm guessing I can trust PriusChat and yahoo not to do harm to me or my computer. :boink:

OK. I was under the assumption that PC did not have that much traffic. When you look under Forums it would only show 30-40 people logged in at a time. I've had commercial sites I've built that were linked to ebay and my suppliers which had a few gigs of traffic a month and worked perfectly under a $20 a month plan from Interadvantage. The site I have now:

    conroysworld.com

runs about 2 Gigs of traffic a month (~ 5000 unique visitors) and costs $9 a month to host. I had the $20 plan for conroysworld but my traffic was not high enough to justify it. Is PC getting more than 2 Gigs of traffic a month? If so I'm very impressed. You should be making a fortune on ads. I had some ads running on conroysworld but removed them because the traffic was not high enough to bother.

conroy, if you're such hot shit, why don't you pitch in and HELP
instead of wasting everyone's time whining? And do a little
historical research before mouthing off next time, like where
it plainly says "vBulletin" at the bottom of every page and the
fact that the forums are up to over 45,000 posted threads which
isn't exactly something you get on a tiny podunk site.
    .
It sounds like you could help Danny out if you routinely develop
this sort of thing, because not everybody is necessarily the
perfect mighty wizard you clearly are. Get involved or get lost.

    Danny,

Glad to see things running more smoothly today, as well as faster!

I had some trouble yesterday trying to post -- some of it likely was me, and some likely was the site. I'm no computer guru; once software replaced jumpers I was lost.

I've noticed that one of my posts is missing. Perhaps there are more (there probably should be many of mine removed), but I know there is one that posted earlier but now is gone. Will any of these posts show up again?

45,000 posted threads over how long of a period? The total number does not matter as much as the frequency. Plus this site is mostily text which keeps bandwidth down.

Just because they use vBulletin does not mean a lot of the code is not theirs. Its very common to use 3rd party COTS in an application.

I'm not whining sorry if it seems that way. I'm just curious.
