Prius 2008: I got over 60mpg at 70 mph, BUT that was by drafting a semi going 70. Otherwise 70 mph seems to get only about 48 mpg without drafting. Comments?
Only 48 MPG?? That's very respectable for 70 MPH. Better than EPA. If you want more you need to slow down. And if you're drafting closely enough to improve by that much, you're probably too close to be safe.
Is this over the course of a tank or a segment of a tank (IE for a few minutes)?. 48mpg is still great no matter how you cut it.
I just started my 2nd tank yesterday. The first tank was 417 miles (had just dropped to 3 gauge bars lit), 6.117 gallons which calculates to 68.17 mpg but is probably an underfill since I stopped pumping as soon as the nozzle clicked off. The computer showed 50.8 mpg. We shall see what the next tankful looks like. In any case, I'm pleased. Peace, --CC--
Leaving Lake Tahoe (mostly downhill) my best mileage for the first 58 miles was 90.1 mpg, which was pretty awesome! But, on average, I usually get between 42 to 51 mpg per tank, depends on how and where I'm driving.
ok i just bought my Prius about 2 weeks ago (!!!) and ergo am unfamiliar with all these terms....what is "mobil1"? did you mean mobile? and if so.......what did you mean by that ? thanks!
Mobil 1 is synthetic motor oil from Mobil Oil Co. Many car owners use synthetic oil instead of regular oil. ("Mobil" is the correct spelling here.)
First tank = 47.8 second tank = 51.8 here is third tank= Only mods I have done are to up the air pressure in tires 44/42 and to slow down on Interstate and coast and glide as much as I can and also when stopping start breaking way early and come to smooth stop...I have ordered a block heater from Prius shop..I love this car and what its saving me in gas !!!!
Just finished my first tank yesterday after picking up the car on 3/28. The MFD says I did 50.3 MPG average for the tank. Calculation of 475 miles and 8.05 gallons added to the tank comes out to 59 and change MPG. Is there always this much difference in the numbers? A little OT question if I may... When the last unit on the fuel gauge starts blinking, how much gas is really left? Is it possible I still have over 3 gallons in my tank when I fueled? I pumped at low speed and the outside temp was about 62 and I stopped when it first clicked off. It now shows full again. I still need to increase the tire pressure as I am running at dealer levels. Thanks, Barry
Averaged 66.4 MPG by the math. This was filling up in Ft. Lauderdale traveling to and throughout the Florida Keys then filling up back in Homestead. Area is definitely flat aside from some of the island to island bridges. Probably won't see that kind of mileage again for some time. Average around KY is 55.5 MPG. Lots of rolling hills to deal with. These numbers are much better than the 43 MPG tanks used at highway speeds (70-80MPH). Are this pretty common #s for these conditions?
At 190 miles on my current tank, my average is 55.7. I owe it all to Prius Chat! Thanks for all the good info!
Got my 2008 Prius 6 days ago and I have 731 miles already. I drive 40 miles one way to work, and we went to see my mother this weekend. I started the MPG test with the first tank full that I filled up and then refilled 3 days later and got 51.95MPG (441 miles with 8.489 gallons). The computer showed 50.8MPG. That better than I expected with the car being new. I am going to fill up about 4 times and then do a 4 tank MPG average. Plan to repost again in about 2 to 3 weeks.

Well tank 2 went in this morning. 510 miles 8.26 gals. MFD said 52.4 MPG, calculated is 61.7 MPG, either way it beats the hell out of EPA.
Hey fellas, I've only had the car for a day. Picked it up last night. So, '08 Prius base - Canadian version. Which means my tires are Bridgestone Turanza 195/55/16 currently set at 45/45psi. Did a mock trial run to work - one way - 34km (21 US miles). Temperature around 13Celsius (55F). 100% city driving, light-moderate traffic, non-flat terrain. MFD showed 3.0l/100km = 78mpg(US). Finished today with over 200km and FE of 3.5l/100km = 67mpg(US). I'm going to assume the car is filled with E10 87 octane gas by the dealer. Will be switching to 0% ethanol 91 octane on the first fillup. I'm very happy so far.
Echelon, the front tires should be 2 psi higher than the rear ones - check your manual. This is since the front end weighs more than the rear. Great MPG - keep it up
