I've been wondering recently what would happen if both the gas and brake were held down in a Prius at the same time for a couple of seconds. specifically at 40mph or so. My hunch is that after 3 or so seconds the drive by wire system will just close the throttle plate and cut the signal to the electric motors and the car will slow down - this is what happens in my car (A4 Avant with drive by wire). My friend thinks that the HSD and brakes will fight it out. Anyone have any experience? Thanks!

The brake will win over the gas. If your Prius is not moving but in D, you can hold down the brake and step on the gas. This will cause the engine to run and charge the HV battery, as long as the battery can absorb the charge. After the battery reaches its high limit, the engine will shut down. Some Prius drivers use this trick to get force a high SoC for speed trials.

Hi pghavant, welcome to PriusChat! :welcome: The Prius drive-by-wire is smart and won't let you do stupid stuff, like moving the selector from D to R while you're moving, or bumping the power button while moving. As another PriusChatter put it, with the Prius, you're a voting member for drive train control.

Yup. No smokey tire burnouts in the Prius. I tried and my car shook its head and then lauhed at my sillyness.

nhw 11 prius is cool, you can shift to reverse while driving, and itll simply go into neutral until u hit 7 mph.

    its nice to scare tailgaters

Hmm, sounds like that would be a fun feature. I wonder if Hobbit could figure out a way to make this work in the nhw20; at least with the lights part anyway?

It isn't hard at all to turn the reverse lights on at any time you want. You could just wire them to 12V with a switch (something I've done on other cars). In fact, with the "anytime video" mod in the Prius, we had to add a diode just to keep the lights off when we wanted to watch the video when in D. The normal state would be to have those reverse lights come on when we trick it.

Hobbit is way ahead of you. But speaking of reverse lights... if you push the selector to "R" while driving and it kicks you to neutral, do the reverse lights come on at all? I would guess not, but I'd be amused if they do. Kinda hard to check that while I'm driving though.
