Ok, here's what is really happening with my reflection issues. I tried the windex - no difference. I now know why.

I spent some time watching while my wife was driving and I was the passenger trying to understand what was going on with the different intensity of dash reflection during different times of day and how it relates to angle of travel relative to the sun.

What I realized is this. The effect is being caused by the 'absence' of reflection. When the light comes in through front of the windshield, a shadow is cast on the dash board in front of the vertical display panel which houses the speedometer and odometer and other cluster warning lights. In essence, their is now an area on the dashboard that will have different 'look' to it when it is reflected up on the windshield. It is the reflection of this shadowed area surrounded by the grey dash. It appears as a cutout in the windshield surrounded by the grey matted reflection of the rest of the dash. It is not a glare mind you but actually an area that appears to be crystal clear visibility wise. Through the area of reflected shadow everything looks great. It does however cause your mind to pay attention to the other 90% of the reflected grey dash that cause the distraction. In actuality the reflected grey dash would not be noticed if not for the juxtaposition of this shadow reflection. The understanding of this effect doesn't make it any less distracting. Even though both reflections don't cause any problems with visibility, a uniform view out the window is not possible and it is projected right in my line of sight. Either I shrink a few inches and look out the portal of shadowed area or raise my seat (which isn't possible) to stay in the grey zone.

I'd appreciate it if you folks that own a prius would let me know if you are seeing what I am seeing. Thanks in advance. Hope this explanation helps. Not sure if polarizing sunglasses will have any effect on this problem.

I know what you are talking about, but you have to be pretty picky to be bothered by it. It's just something you get used to, like the long A pillars.

I have a grey dash on my 2007, and that sort of thing would really bug me, so I think that your dash must be glossier than mine. I am still thinking either the finish has been modified, or somehting was added that does not come off easily with windex. May need to consult with an auto detail shop and see it there is a vax remover, or some sort of matt finish treatment that could be added.

Has anything changed regarding dash board layout on 2007 and 2008 that would cause the problem to be specific to 2008 models ? That might explain why there is a group of owners not concurring with what I'm seeing. Maybe they've gotten use to it, or perhaps are not looking for at the same time of day when it is more obvious or it is a 2008 issue ? I really don't know. I'd like to hear from a few more 2008 owners. If they are not seeing what I'm seeing then I'll reconsider the notion that some product has been applied on my dash by the dealer that is causing greater reflectivity. From what I've observed/analyzed, I'm thinking that it is just the design. I'd be happy to know that I'm wrong though. I really don't want to abraid or damage my dash by putting any solvents on it to remove something that isn't there. I will also call my dealer tomorrow and ask them if they put anything on it. Thanks everyone for your comments to date. I hate to seem nit picky but to me this is not something that i believe only I'd notice. Please continue to post your observations.

Do you mean the green reflection on the lower windshield caused by the speedometer? I have a 2008 model, and although the reflection is there during the daytime, it is barely noticeable--not really a distraction at all for me. At night though I have to dim the speedometer light so that the reflection isn't so glaring. Other than that, I don't think I am having the same issues you are. Oh and I am 5'7, so maybe I'm at the certain height where the reflection doesn't show up (I didn't understand some of what you were talking about in you original post but I gathered something about being at specific heights that would diminish the reflection).

Of course I'm probably describing something different than you are and in that case this whole post will have been a waste of everyone's time. :)

I agree with Bryan. I have grey '08 dash. The reflection at night really bothered me until I used the same light Bryan used to cut the light down. I see a bit during the day but nothing that really bugs me. I am 5'9" but I sit low because I have long legs and short torso. Might have something to do with your height?

How can I post an picture of this to the forum ? Maybe that would help ? Then you could let me know if it is just me, my particular vehicle or something else. Although it might be hard to capture on camera I'd give it a try.

I am talking about a daytime dash reflection issue. There is an oval shaped reflection (about 3 inches by 15 inches) that is projected on my windshield in my line of sight. The grey dash is reflected onto the window and in and of itself is not a distraction or glare producing. In fact it covers most of the windshield but is not noticeable or distracting. The oval reflection is caused by shadow cast on the grey dash from when the sun hits the top of the head's up display. That's the display that holds the speedometer and odometer and warning lights. It falls onto the dash just in front of the glass that protects the display. Usually this happens when the sun is lower in the sky and coming from right side of car or directly in front. This shadow is the reflected up onto the windshield as well. It appears to be surrounded by and contrasted by the normal dash reflection. I suppose I could take a picture and post it. The fringe of the shadow reflection and the grey dash reflection bisect my view. If either one individually was entirely in view it would not be a problem. The 2 contrasting views simultaneously is my problem. Thanks to all for trying to help.

The reflection is a result of the low windshield angle. The Prius windshield is tipped way back for good aerodynamics, which is why it has the long flat open area on the dash. With this sort of reflection, you only have four degrees of freedom to control:

    1) The reflective characteristics of the glass: You really don't have many options in this area. It's not like you can swap out the windshield for a low reflection model. It is possible to coat the interior surface, but it's not practical.

    2) Lighting: Reflections on glass depend on the lighting differential between the inside and the outside. You can control this at night, but in the daytime you are out of luck.

    3) Angle: The windshield angle is fixed, so that is out. You do have a little control through your seating position, but that offers a trade-off with comfort.

    4) Dash: You can control the color and reflective nature of the dash.

#4 is the only option with any real range of control. If this is a real problem that you can't live with, you may want to make a dash cover out of a matte material. Other drivers have done this, but usually to eliminate the reflection from the speedometer display.

BobbyB - thanks for the verification that what I see on my 08 is reproduceable and at least a slight annoyance to you. You obviously have an 08 as well. I take it that you either just got used to it or that you have a dash cover installed ? Thanks for getting back.

Qbee42 - thanks for your comments. I read your post and the previous ones on my topic. Admittedly, I am a bit picky. I suppose I might eventually get used to this and hopefully not even notice it later. As you mentioned, there is always the dash cover option.

Apparently you at least notice it but it doesn't bother you at all ? There are so many great things about the vehicle - perhaps I am making too much about this one negative ? Expectation of perfection in this world of form certainly is a receipe for constant disappointment.

There... I offset my seemingly negative posts hopefully with some words of wisdom. If only I could listen to that voice of reason.....

"To fully accept the present moment as it is, without resistance and to welcome it as though it already is exactly as I'd have chosen it to be."

This is a work in progress as most of us are always thinking our here and now isn't good enough. We put off our happiness to some illusory point in the future which never comes instead of being happy in the present moment. The present moment is the only place where anything and everything can happen. Like most, I fall into the trap of my 'here and now' not being good enough and think that at some future point in time I will be whole and complete. This I suppose is the human condition which is insane. Awareness of this is at least a start I suppose and when I find myself slipping into that trap I regroup and return at least for a few moments to sanity.

I'm thinking that the prius will undoubtedly go down as the best car I've ever owned and I've owned a lot of cars in my lifetime.

Certainly, I can see reflections in various lighting conditions. I've had that in pretty much every car I've driven, except for my Jeep C-J5. In that one, the windshield was flat and almost vertical. The only reflection you were likely to see was your neck tie. My Ford Aerostar also has a highly angled windshield, and you get the same thing with it. The only way to avoid reflections when looking through shiny angled glass is to keep the surface under the angle completely black. Anything else and you get a reflection. If you keep the surface under the angle a uniform shade, you get a reflection, but you aren't likely to notice it since it will be uniform. What gets you are the discontinuities, which show up as lines and spots on the windshield. That's where a cover comes into play: it makes things darker, but more importantly, it makes the field uniform.

For me, it isn't a big distraction. I just look through it.

Something you might try is a black piece of plastic that you can buy at an auto place or battery shop. It sticks to the dash and I use it for my cell phone, sun glasses, change. Things stick to it. It might fit the glare spot and it looks fine.

Is it like fly mesh, if you focus beyond it you won't see it?

That's what I use too (I think) -- thin black neoprene; the stuff on the bottom of classic mouse pads. It sticks to the dash and stuff sticks to it. It practically blends in with the dash. I buy it from a rubber/foam supplies store on Canal Street in NYC (I'm just sayin' ... I know that most of you will not have access to a similar brick and mortar store). One square foot sheet costs $2 for thin neoprene (thicker neoprene costs a little more). They also sell neoprene sheeting in wider width rolls by the linear foot.

I got mine at Battery Plus store for $7. They probably have them at Wal-Mart. They are a flat piece of black plastic with a sticky side that lays where you put it on the dash without sliding around. Maybe a little smaller than the size of two packs of cigarettes laying side by side but totally flat and hardly visible. I think it will do the trick for you.

Yes, I know what you have now. I've seen those in stores too.

BTW, I have two extras of those thin one foot square neoprene sheets I was talking about. (Click thumbnail picture below -- it's sticking all by itself on the back of my sofa.) They're real handy. I cut them into smaller pieces to lay on my dash to hold things. You can also cut them to line cupholders or other bins in the Prius to stop stuff from sliding around (that's what the PadsPlus guy on ebay uses -- he sells neoprene liners specially cut for the Prius and other cars' bins).

If you or the OP would like to have one of my extras of the neoprene sheets, just PM me with a mailing address and promise me that you'll pay forward the shipping costs by giving $2 extra to charity or a homeless person this year, and I'll send you one of my extras.

I have nothing useful to add to the reflection discussion, but just a bit of trivia for Tom. Catherine Ryan Hyde, author of "Pay It Forward," lives here in Cambria, as does her mother. My wife and daughter know her and her mom.

BTW, I saw your webpage and Cambria sounds lovely. I think I'll check it out next time I'm in those parts.
