Well, the good news is that we've gone from 2 Mercedes to 2 Prius (1 2005/red, 1 2006 blue).... Love it, love it! Now, the weird part. My wife just lost one of her keys - and now can't figure out where the little silver keytag thingie went to in order to get a replacement. We have the 'keyless go' thingie, doors open when touched, just push start, no need to put the key in. I think this is 'SKS'? I see I can buy a replacement key online (http://www.keylessride.com/order/chooseremote.asp?make=Toyota&remoteyear=2005&model=Prius). Even comes with programming instructions (even found instructions on CoastalTech's site). So, can I just buy the replacement and reprogram it? And, then have a local key store cut the key? What do I need that little silver thingie the dealer made a big deal about (personally, I'm guessing it's to order a precut key)? Even better, any reason why I can't program her car to recognize the 'spare' key for my car (2 cars, 3 keys)? PS: Haven't posted - but have been a supporter. Ordered a bunch of stuff from Sigma, was gonna order XM from CoastalTech, but given the posts, went with PriusXM (and them PriusSirius for the wifes car). Thanks!
Welcome to PriusChat! There have been several discussion on this topic that answer most of your questions. I suggest using the Search function and search for replacement key or SKS. I did not know you could program your own, and thought the tag number was for the dealer to do that for you (for money). C

That is consistent with what previous posters have said. Don't plan on programing it yourself plus you need the other fob for the dealer to do so. Don't lose it too. Try searching for "lost fob" to see what others have said.
If you're talking about the little aluminum sliver with the numbers printed on it, it's a key code so the dealer can cut cut you a new physical key without removing the one from your fob. I still have mine just for that reason.
Keyless ride sells the instructions separately (look at the 2005 Prius link specifically)...And, the description of the key says: P "ROGRAMMING Price INCLUDES programming instructions for training the vehicle to recognize the remote." So, I ordered the instruacitons online for a whopping $15. Unfortunately I won't be able to try it until later this week... I'll post what I find.
The site looks reputable. If you live in Central Washington the nearest partner is in Wenatchee. Nice day trip if you aren't that close. Be careful when choosing a key from the site. Remember, there are two different keys available depending on if you have SmartKey or not. The more expensive remote is for SmartKey equipped cars. The less expensive remote is for non-Smart Key cars.
Thought you said you have the Smart Key System (SKS). If that's the case, you may looking at the wrong fob. The SKS fob requres dealer programing, the normal fob (non-SKS) has the instructions available. Their pictures don't really differentiate by appearance so I used the "Please guide me" link at the bottom. This is the link for SKS fobs
For cryin' out loud, and the upteenth thread already covering this topic The search tool is your friend. If you're talking SKS, you can NOT program it yourself, (only SOME of the functions) so don't believe it. Toyota will sell you the $1,500.00 scantool, if you really really want to do it yourself, but youre gona have to do a bunch of em (at $20 or $40 a piece) for your whole city to recoup your investment.
now theres an idea! i bet in the bay area i can get maybe 30 people to come to me and pay $50 to have thier keys programmed, they would need thier own key tho. maybe throw in a couple glass breakage sensor enables the only fault with that is, if you get the programmer for 1,500 where do you get the toyota software card?
Not to mention the fact that you could only program keys if you have a key that is already programmed to the car. Lose all the keys and the dealer is you only option for reflashing the immobiliser and the SKS ECU. and to repeat..... Once a Smart Key is programmed to one vehicle, it cannot be programmed to another car. It is a one shot deal.:deadhorse:
There are two locking mechanisms that are programmed into the car to accept a new keyfob. The transponder code in the keyfob apparently has no limitations about type of keyfob, prior use, or any of that confusion. Any Prius keyfob (black logo, silver logo, 2004, 2005+) can be programmed for use in the keyslot. I added an eBay keyfob to my 2006 with SKS with a chicken dance similar to http://priuschat.com/forums/knowled...lly-how-program-non-sks-key-fob-detailed.html I later failed to add another keyfob, and had to have it programmed with a Toyota scantool. The smart system and the remote button control are another issue. I've heard of both success stories and failures to add a used keyfob. Apparently each time the keyfob sends its ID, it steps to the next encrypted code. The immobilizer computer in the car seems to need the step to be somewhere near a new keyfob code. Actually, I've also heard that the immobilizer reset (dealer only function) can be used to add some keyfobs that are not acceptable with the simpler add keyfob function. If you're in the SF area, there is an excellent independent shop in Berkeley that has a Toyota scantool. They bailed me out from an experiment where I managed to disable all but one keyfob (beware the wrong chicken dance...). Art's Automotive in Berkeley reprogrammed my 4 keyfobs for less than $50. The two original keys have full function, one eBay silver logo unit only works in the keyslot, and a black logo unit also only works in the keyslot. I've since cannibalized the black logo unit for the transponder, and set it up for use with a remote start system.
steps to add 2009 Prius new remote/ key fob (Yes it Does for a 2009 Prius. Also BIG Thing: Have only the old remote and new or USED remote in the car. No Cell or Phone or Blue Tooth) 1.Insert old fob into slot and remove it 4 times in a row, and insert it a fifth time but leave it in there! 2.Open and close driver door 6 times. 3.Remove old fob from slot. Car is in fob programming mode at this point. 4.Insert new fob and leave in the slot for a full minute. Watch the blinking red anti-theft light on the dashboard. When it stops flashing and goes dark, your new fob is all set. 5.After a minute, press the power once and open door, or vise-vera, Hey it worked for me, but only with the FOB inserted. 6.Remove the new fob and you’re done. You should test both fobs to be sure they work properly. Now for the door lock functions. The Fob (for remotely unlocking/locking the doors) 1.Open the driver door with no fob in slot and the driver door unlocked and opened. Other doors can be locked or unlocked, it doesn’t matter. 2.Insert old fob into slot and remove it twice within 5 seconds. 3.Close and open driver door twice. 4.Insert and remove old fob once. 5.Close and open driver door twice again. 6.Insert old fob in slot and close door. 7.Without pressing the brake, press power button, wait a second, press it again, wait a second, press it a third time to turn car back off. 8.Remove old fob from slot. You’ll be in “add mode” at this point. 9.Car should lock and unlock doors TWICE to verify it is in add mode. 10.Press both buttons on new fob simultaneously for a second and a half!. 11 Within 3 seconds, press only the lock symbol button. yes it does matter which! 11.Car should respond with one quick lock/unlock to verify that the new fob is all set. If the car responds with two lock/unlocks, that means it didn’t work. I don’t know how to troubleshoot that problem. Maybe just try again. 12.To end this programming, open a door or put fob in the slot. 13.Enjoy the savings from NOT buying a fob from the dealership!!!!! 14.If you want metal keys, DO not buy them from e bay, they quoted me $7.92 CUT by them from dealer.
