100% ELECTRIC....0-60 in less than 4 seconds?

Word about the Telsa has been out for a while now. I can't wait til they become available in the US which should be very soon.

 

Where've you been? We've been watching Tesla for a year or two. There've been several threads over the years. A year ago I visited their headquarters in San Carlos, CA, and was given a ride. Their production date was delayed due to problems with the design of the transmission (I and others thought a transmission was a bad idea from the start: one more thing to go wrong; but they wanted both extreme low-end acceleration and high top speed, and that required a transmission) but they now expect to go into production this quarter, one car per week to start, then ramping up to produce the 650 cars already sold for the 2008 model year. But if you get on their waiting list now, you've got a year and a half to wait, at least.

It's a beautiful car. I want one, but not badly enough to wait that long. It's also louder than a Prius, because of the liquid refrigeration unit that cools the Li-Ion batteries. The funny thing is that my little Zap Xebra is going to have a more advanced battery pack than the Tesla. Tesla is using laptop Li-Ion batteries to keep the price down, but those require sophisticated cooling and monitoring. I will have a LiFePO4 battery pack, which is much more stable up to much higher temperatures.
