Has anyone heard anything new about this "feature"?

I'm so hoping that someone will figure out how to hack that...

SKS does stand for Smart Key System when it comes to unlocking the car, but it changes meaning to Stupid Key System when it's about locking it...definitely.

SKS doesn't lock the car when you walk away. You can hit the small black buttons on the door handles or the hatch. Hitting those will lock the car.

Thanks, Michael, I understand that, but I'm still hoping that someone has/will figure out how to "Smart Lock" the car...

No matter how smart the SKS gets, it will never overcome my OCD.

...seems like it's a dealer-programmable option on the Mazdas:

Please roll down to the bottom of page to see your SKS key in the picture and read the text.

From the text, it seems to me that the system was capable of doing just that, and somehow our Prius don't have that feature. What do you think? Blame Toyota lawyers? I don't remember where I read this but it said that Prius in some other markets have this feature. I will have to dig it out to prove it. For now, I have no link to support my point. My guess is that the feature is there, and it was turned off by Toyota on purpose to avoid lawsuits. (Just like Verizon turned off OBEX in Bluetooth)

I just bought a MAZDA CX-9 with "Smart Card Key" (SKS in Toyota's term). There is such feature of "Auto Lock" that
automatically lock the doors of CX-9 provided that
    - CX-9 is in Park gear position
    - Smart Car Key is at least 30ft away.
This feature is OFF from factory. You need to ask the dealer to turn it on.

Maybe lawyers, maybe designers/engineers... there's a bunch of "interesting" design/engineering decisions in the Prius, which have nothing to do with lawyers.

In reading the Prius 2008 Quick Reference Guide I was given on page 4, it states "Carrying a Smart Key allows the vehicle to be locked, unlocked and the Hybrid System engaged without handling the key." "NOTE: After unlocking if a door is not opened within 30 seconds, all doors will relock for safety."

I called Toyota customer service and he was not sure then I realized if the car is locked and then unlocked via Smart Key but car not entered then car relocks within 30 seconds. To lock, you still do not need any key just press black button on door handle to lock which isn't the same as just walking away from the car but is easy enough.;)

This is absolutely true. I was out washing the car and it kept unlocking and locking itself. I finally figured out the key was in my pocket and the car was sensing it's presents. Pretty funny at the time. Dang smart car.

Well...that's not the point, isn't it... Using those buttons is not any 1.smarter, nor 2.easier then using the button on the remote control, which is something we'd been doing for many years, so where's the progress here...

I am interested in the Wood Dash Kit and the back up camera that you show as items that you have added to you 05...could you post pictures of the dash? where did you get it? How much did it cost?
Who put it on for you? and the back up camera as to where you got it, how much was it, and who put it on for you?

Even though Prius may have this Walk-Away-Auto-Lock feature, I'd rather rely the Lock button on Remote/Door handle for locking my car instead.

I mean, how reliable the Auto-Lock feature might be? Is it really locking itself automatically or some interference might stop it? I never know until I go back to the car again. (and assume my car is still there first!) ;)

By using the fob/door handle lock button, at least I know the car is truely secured before I 'walk away'.

All of that is nonsense... You "know" that the car is locked ONLY because it beeps or blinks ot does something that you recognize as the "locked" signal, not because you pressed this or that button. Sometimes, pressing the button doesn't lock the car, and how do you know that? - The car doesn't beep. The same would be true if you're walking away... you hear the beep, and you know that it's locked... you don't - you go back and figure out what's wrong. Not ANY different then either remote or handle button, except - no need for a button :)

I agree with this as I can actually hear the doors lock and besides, I never have to take the keys out of my purse. If I needed the Smart Key to lock the doors I would have to take it out of my purse to use. This way I enter car without keys, drive, get out and press button on door handle without ever removing keys from purse. Works for me!;)
