2006 models (the year the the high resolution screen began) have a 5th Generation Nav system. As far as I know, I believe this applies to the 07s and 08s as well.

Bump for an answer to this question. I have a 2004 (same as 2005), Nav v7.1, and want to buy the Ultimate Lockpick from Coastal but it seems like I won't be able to do address entry with 7.1 and the lockpick?

I picked up a NAV upgrade for my 2006 Prius from my local dealer today. It is labeled CY '07 Navigation Upgrade Gen 4" I told the parts guy that I thought the 06 Nav should be Gen5, but he looked it up on his computer, and it looked like he was right. If it is Gen5, where is it documented? He claimed he checked with the place he got it from, and they told him I needed Gen4.
    Thanks for any help.

    Your dealer is DEAD WRONG

'06 Prius has a Gen. 5 navigation system. Ver. 07.1 Disk for your car is part # 86271-53022. That number is on the disk. If you disk doesn't have that number it's the wrong one. The disk itself doesn't indicate the Generation number, just the part number. but maybe your packaging did.

    Gen5 v.07.1 is part # 86271-53022. (06-08 Prius)Your car

    Gen4 v.07.1 is part # 86271-33047. (04-05 Prius)That's not your car

    Gen(2)3 v.07.1 is part # 86807-12016. (01-03 Prius)

Tell your dealer to reference Toyota PANT Bulletin 07-37 dated Nov. 1, 2007 ; second and third page, and aspire to do better at his job!

I just got a new Gen5 v.07.1 disk 86271-53022 off Ebay for $99.00! There are a couple others there, but you really need to know what your're looking for.

Thanks 9G-Man. I called the dealership this morning and gave them the information. Their response was that information from the internet was unreliable. I was quite insistent and asked them read the Bulletin mentioned above. They called back this afternoon, and agreed that I/you/PriusChat was correct. They will call when the Gen5 DVD comes in.

I have a 2004 Prius and have never been happy with the Nav system especially because it can't be taught better routes and it can't be programmed while moving. I also would love to have a 3-D view. Are any of these features on upgraded versions? Can I use a DVD-ROM put out by a different company that will not present compatibility issues?

No and no. The only way to significantly upgrade the navigation is by buying a stand-alone unit.

I realize this is slightly off-subject, but allow me to once again state my extreme disappointment in the nav system. Our standalone Garmin Nuvii 350 is excellent, my bells-and-whistley Toyota system is laughably unreliable.
Is it possible that future disk upgrades might help?

    Hi guys,

I am not here to argue if the NAV worth the $$ or disable while in motion, but I personally think this is a safety feature that i can live with. I have try to operate the NAV system on my other car while in motion (use the code i found here), and i can tell u it is very dangerous. I almost hit a biker passing me from behind on the highway. Long story. Second, I let my passenger do the search and can't resist to keep watching what they do. It is just too much distraction.

Regards someone having trouble using the NAV, you can try my trick below. I m in north california, and also travel a lot to see client at different house or city, so far I am able to find all of them. 1 out of 300 addresses I go, was not able to find it in the NAV. But I managed to find a close enough address and know on his door. Even mapquest map point me to a total different route and direction.

1, if u are having trouble finding an address, you can try first input the street name. I believed the system will automatically show you the street name and city name. Select the correct one and then it will prompt u to input the house number. 99.99% you will see the destination house number will fall between the range your NAV software showing. Punch the house number and the NAV is ready to use. So what's the 0.01% you might ask, well, there is time the destination house number is not showing. Then you might either pick one number closes to your destination or check the street name again, u can try to input North, south, east, west what ever you can think of to show the hidden street.

2, Navtaq provides the map data as well as responsible to correct whatever bugs they have. They provide the databased based on the licensee's contract and the nature of the usage environment, Portable or Vehicle used. Thus, the result or features such as POI will be greatly deffer between your portable and your NAV system. Try to contact them and let them know the data is not correct.

    good luck.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "laughably unreliable".

The merits of Toyota NAV vs. aftermarket have been debated many times over in other threads, so I won't rehash it all here.

If your comment is related to addresses or streets not being found, then yes, future map updates will improve the performance.

If your comment is related to features aftermarket units have that the Toyota does not, then you are probably out of luck there.

As kermityfrog suggested, you can enter an address in various orders (street name, house number, city) which can help pinpoint when a particular housenumber may not be in the database. Likewise for searching POI by name, if you enter the city name it will greatly narrow the search results.

Just take it for what it is, learn the voice commands (especially "Address" and "Nearest" <any POI category>) and familiarize yourself with the Freeway Guidance view for travelling, and it is actually quite effective.

Many of the complaints people make about the system being "unfriendly" are founded in knowledge of other systems, and of course you will always like the one you know best.

Unfortunately for you, me and apparantly many many other folks, THE TOYOTA FACTORY NAVIGATION SYSTEM HAS MANY QUALITY ISSUES!
I purchased a 2008 Prius Touring Pkg. 6. With Glass Breakage Sensor,
and Rear Bumper Applique. Dec. 1st.
My Navigation System DOES NOT RECOGNIZE MY STREET OR HOUSE ADDRESS. Also CHANGES SOME STREET NAMES WHEN IT FEELS LIKE IT?
TOYOTA SAYS; WE HAVE CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, AND AS SOON AS A SYSTEM UPDATE IS AVAILABLE YOU WILL BE CONTACTED. Several Website Forums Discussing This Issue say It could be more than 2 years before they have MY STREET ADDRESS correct on a disc update. WHY SHOULD WE WHO PAID SO MUCH FOR THESE FACTORY NAVIGATION SYSTEMS THEN BE EXPECTED TO PAY YET AGAIN FOR AN UPDATED DISC?
CONTAINING WHAT? MAYBE THE CORRECT INFO IS REALLY ON THE DISC?
That is absolutely Rediculous. This is A BRAND NEW 2008 PRIUS TOURING.
Toyota Has NO EXCUSE FOR THE FACTORY NAVIGATION SYSTEMS NOT BEING ABLE TO RECOGNIZE OWNERS HOME STREET ADDRESSES?
THIS SUBDIVISION AND ALL STREETS HAVE BEEN HERE FOR 15 YEARS.
SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG WITH THIS NAVIGATION SYSTEM?
Is There Anyone Else Experiencing Any Of These Type Of Problems?
I must Admit Being EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED With This Nav. System!
The Prius Otherwise Is Fantastic. MPG is Great Compared to my Old SUV.

I sent toyota customer care a blistering letter about this issue as well as The Auto Door Lock Feature Toyota FORGOT TO INCLUDE IN THE CAR!
The Owners Manual CLEARLY STATES the auto lock feature is included and is customizeable as well. Dealers Tech and Toyotas Senior Field Tech CANNOT MAKE THE FEATURE WORK. Toyota Customer Care wrote saying,
"Although listed in the owners manual, automatic door locking feature is NOT AVAILABLE for your vehicle." Toyota made that decision. WHY?
THIS IS NOT ONLY AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD, BUT IS ALSO A "CARJACKERS DREAM COME TRUE" If you forget to use the armrest lock button, ANYONE CAN COME UP TO YOUR CAR AND OPEN ANY DOOR!
UNLESS I GET SOME SATISFACTION FROM TOYOTA ABOUT THESE ISSUES, I WILL DEFINATELY BE CONTACING THE NHTSA. TOYOTA MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR INCLUDING FEATURES IN THE OWNERS MANUALS THAT ARE NOT ACTAULLY PUT ON THE CAR. Home | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) | U.S. Department of Transportation .

UPDATE AS OF 2/05/2008 FROM TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE? NO, NOT REALLY!
A supervisor just contacted me today, and had the audacity to tell me "while it is unfortunate you are experiencing difficulties with your Factory Navigation System, (yeah like it doesn't know my home street address, so it can't give me turn by turn directions anywhere) Toyota WILL NOT Make Update Discs available to you FREE. Update discs are 'customer pay' items".
Well Know, So What Do You All Think of That, So much for Toyota Quality & Customer Care?
It is obvious to me that the money I paid for this Navigation System, WAS A COMPLETE WASTE, AS TOYOTA HAS NO INTENTION OF GIVING ME EVEN ONE LOUSY UPDATE DISC!
So if you are gonna get a Prius DON'T BOTHER GETTING THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM!
It is interesting to also note that while my wife was at Office Depot, she input our home street address into both a Tom Tom, and a Magellon Nav. System and both accepted the address and gave her turn by turn navigation to our home, with no problem at all.
Do yourselves a favor and Save Money, BUY THE AFTERMARKET NAVIGATION SYSTEMS!
I genuinely feel "just so violated" of being ripped off by Toyota!
So, as they say, and it surely rings true in this instance with Toyota, "BUYER BEWARE"

You could always create a POI while sitting in your drive way - then the address isn't needed.

Then, just go to that POI to get your directions if you can't find you way home.

Seems like you can look at the address of a POI as well. Make the POI then get info to see what it says. Maybe the Nav does not recognize the street name as you have entered it.

I wholeheartedly agree the factory nav system is extremely inferior to the basic portable street nav units. Frustrates and disappoints me just about every time I use it.

And one of the most useful features is having it help you navigate back to you home.

There is a solution to your issue about it not recognizing your home address. Sitting in your driveway, just save your present position as your HOME waypoint locaton. Or use the compass mode screen to get your home's Lat/Long CoOrdinates, and use those. You now have a memory waypoint for your home you can navigate back to, just like as if you'd input the address.
Thank goodness it has that capability.
You'll even be able to say "GO HOME" just like the rest of us, and it'll take you there.!
If you don't understand, or can't do it, reply here and I'll give you step-by-step instructions.

I don't even bother setting my house as the home address. I've got "home" set about a mile away. This works fine---I can find my house from there!

I find the "go home" function most useful when leaving an unfamiliar area. The Nav provides turn guidance to get me started on the trip. When I'm back on familiar roads, I cancel guidance. I don't need it telling me at that point.

I used it a month ago when leaving San Francisco. The nav gave me turn guidance to get onto US101---less than five minutes of driving. Once I was there, I cancelled guidance; I know my way home at that point.

You've been given a workaround to set a Home location. Yes, it isn't the same as the nav knowing your home address. But it works.

Mypineprius, I doubt screaming here on the forum will change Toyota's position. Toyota buys the nav system from an electronics vendor. That vendor uses Navteq data. True, Toyota takes responsibility for warranty replacement of a defective unit, but they know nothing about its internal operation.

Toyota has no control over Navteq's speed of map updating, nor do they have much control over the nav vendor's updates. They simply sell the latest disc as provided by the nav vendor.

This was exactly the same when I bought my 2004 Volvo XC90. That nav system didn't have detail for smaller towns, so I didn't buy it. Volvo buys the system from Denso, who uses Navteq data. Volvo knows nothing about how it works.

Sound systems work similarly. Toyota doesn't make the radio.

I use the nav like auricchio. Once I'm out of an unfamiliar area, I cancel.

    This is for Atwork:

Go back to using google maps (at least for a day). Whenever you park in a client's home (it does not matter if their address is known by the software or not), mark it and add the house to your "My Places" with the clients name, of course.

The next day, you can just grab their names from your places and plan your route.

Earlier on this thread someone asked if a backup could be made of the new version 7.1 and the answer is yes.

I bought a new 7.1 from Metro and have made a backup successfully

Using a black MacBook and Disk Utility I first made a disk image of the DVD.

Then made a new master with Disk Utility. I used a blank DVD+R DL.

I tried a Fuji disk unsuccessfully but had perfect results from Verbatim disks.

Besides being illegal and immoral don’t you have to take things apart and wouldn’t the dealer notice if you were to do that to one of their cars….

I just bought an 02 Prius, and would love some help with knowing what search criteria you used to find your disk on ebay. I'd need this one:
    Gen(2)3 v.07.1 is part # 86807-12016. (01-03 Prius)

    Thanks,
    Linda
