I have a 2006 Prius which has worked out very well for me. I typically average between 47-50 in town with even better mileage on the open road. I have a leased Volvo which will come due the beginning of this March. I am considering getting another Prius, this one for my wife. She would really like leather seats. We don't need the other accessories like the fancy radio and the NAV system. Am I correct in assuming that the only way to get leather seats is through the package. In other words, all or nothing at all?

Also, I am located in Florida and when I purchased my existing Prius, I had all sorts of trouble getting through my local dealer. He wanted to tack on an automatic $5,000 to the list price and actually had me test drive another already sold Prius. Needless to say, I didn't get the car there. I went a little distance from my house and purchased it at list without the $5,000 premium. How have things changed in the last couple of years? Can I get the car at below sticker? What should I pay for package 6?

Thanks for the help - Rick

It's hard to say what the going rate is other than, Whatever the market will bear.

Consult Consumer Reports advice on car buying, either on their website or in their April issue in a library. If you have more than one dealer within reach you can shop and get the best price in writing by phone, email, and fax, and save money and a lot of bother.

    I just bought a 2008 Touring Package #6 on 01.07.08
Paid $27254 for it (it was actually a little less as they threw in the new plates at $168.00 and title with the deal). It was $1000 off of MSRP. I actually found another dealer that was selling non-touring models for $1500 under MSRP.

In my situation, it was the correct car, the correct color and local.

I love this car and have no regrets whatsoever! :D

i can't say how they've changed, but i can tell you that here in the san francisco bay area you can get a prius with any option package for $500 over the dealer invoice listed at cars.com

at least 3 dealers all contacted me within an hour, and all had a price way below MSRP. i was actually hesitant to use cars.com at first, but it turns out it's way better than the costco deal (that's where i started). the cars.com quotes was just to see what happens before i bought a car. turns out the costco deal was $600 more than the quotes i got back.

might just be my area, but it's worth a shot imo. prius are everywhere here, so we might just have an abundant supply to meet all the demand.. who knows.

    2008 prius + package two = $22,300 +/- $100
    2008 prius + package five = $24,700 +/- $100

+TTL of course ($2200-2400 in california)

cars.com says the 2008 prius with package 6 dealer invoice is $25,450 & MSRP is $27,685. I would not doubt that several dealers out here would sell one for $26k + TTL

Did you want the touring or basic? I got a touring package #3 and added leather. OTD=$28,241.75 (7% tax)This included oem all weather mats, add leather, and toyoguard (was already on the car). I wanted leather, but all the package #6's were quoted to me @ $30,000+ OTD and after haggling with 7 different Toyota dealerships @ the time (12/07) they wouldn't budge on price....they were all getting maximum dollar as they never lasted more than a day on a lot until sold.

I wanted the fancy stereo and bluetooth, but didn't need the NAV so package #3 was my choice and added leather. One thing though...the car was delivered and there was no leather in it so I said wthek? They would not and could not put leather in until I bought the car. I didn't like this, but went with it. A week after I bought the car I had an appointment to get leather installed. Your mileage will vary, but the installer did a so-so job.

However, the installer (and Toyota) fully warantees/backs the install and has since met my requests to clean some things up (crease's in the leather I'm guessing because it was 19F during the week they ordered it/ installed it, and scratches on the interior doors). Overall, if I did it again, I would get the leather put on at the port where they do it for package #6's (factory). With leather "added" it really depends on who the installer is. But I'm satisfied because the car is such a joy to drive and even more so to my wallet.

You can get leather put on any package. Just beware that you might experience some issues depending upon the installer. Someone here ordered a kit from ebay and did it themselves. Pictures looked like it came out very nice. An average price in the Atlanta area (7%ST) for a 08 package #6 touring OTD would be ~$30,000 at the present moment. Good luck!
