Some of you know I am doing under dash LED lighting mod (link here)
Here I am creating a new thread so that it is easier to find, with “Do It Yourself†step by step process.

First I want give credit & thanks to metrotpn.com (Eddy Bell’s XM Radio Installation Instruction), john1701a.com, and my friend who make it possible for a mod newbie like me.

    What you need:

-Cyron LED lighting kit. I bought it from Costco.
    -2 wire tap (18 gauge)
    -Electrical wire tape

    1) Remove glove compartment. Follow this link if you don’t know how:
    http://john1701a.com/prius/documents/Prius_Maintenance_Air-Conditioner-Filter.pdf

    2) Remove under dash lower panel (easy)

    3) Remove the clip of this lower center panel, remove the center panel. Just pull out the clips and claws as shown.

    4) Here is what you get from Cyron LED kit (you need to buy the wire taps though)

    5) Cut the supply wire, you don’t need the AC/DC adaptor. I happen to get extra cable connector, I didn’t need to cut the adaptor. Mine has white stripe, I don’t think cyron’s adaptor has the white stripe (not sure, I can double check later)

    6) Disconnect cigarette lighter adapter, tap cigarette lighter positive goes to positive (Duh!). The positive is white wire, ground is white wire with a black stripe. Just to be sure, I used DVM to measure the voltage. Outer = ground, inner = positive voltage. It should read about +14V. Connect to Cyron controller. I put a tape to make sure they do not separate.

    7) Time to try:

    8) Now the hardest part is to place the LED under the dash board. It is up to you where to place it, just make sure they are easily removed in case you need to remove the panels again. For back light (under the front seat) should be a piece of cake. I use cable ties & the clips provided. The clips are very helpful for adjusting the LED direction. I wouldn’t recommend using the double sided tape.

    9) Put everything back together. Here are some pictures. Oh btw, the Cyron LED kit has 3 LED: Red, Green, Blue, the controller allows you to scan & pause the color you want. Here I took pics for Blue, Green, Red, Purple, there are other colors you might like (white, turquoise, orange, etc), you can also set the color intensity.

 Excellent! Thank you for the pictures and text! Very cool, and the color possibilities are fantastic. I hope to be working on mine soon.

I'd like to tap the power that feeds the dome light so these come on upon opening the door or switching on the domes. Any clues or wire colors to look for?

Have you tried the "Music" mode yet?

I have no idea on the dome light wire.
If you want to tap it from the courtesy door light, you might be able to find the information here (I'm just guessing): http://www.sigmaautomotive.com/jdm/prius/manual_int-footwelllightingkit.pdf

The Music mode is kind of annoying. I can't imagine having blinking LED in my car :) it might be useful while playing guitar hero or something (TV ambient lighting)

oooh impressive! Looks brighter than my JDM kit!

    Hmm... seems easy enough.

That looks so awesome! Thanks for posting how you did it. I'm interested in installing some in my car now haha. I have a question though: When do the lights come on? Do they only come on when you open the door, or do they turn on and stay on when you unlock or start your car, or do they stay on all the time (even when the car is off)? Thanks for the information.

Since I tap cigarette lighter wires to power the LEDs, they turn on only when you power on the car battery. After the car is on, you have full control to turn on or off the LEDs using the cyron controller (has power on/off button).

Off course you can always get the suppy by tapping to other wire functions i.e to the dome light, courtesy door light, headlight, whatever you want. you just need to find out which wires :) I think gadgetdad is planning to tap to the dome light.

Does the Cyron unit remember the power state setting when you cycle power or do you have to turn it on every time using the keypad? In other words if you leave it in the 'on' state then turn the car off, when you power the car on again does the unit turn on automatically?

    1) Does the Cyron unit remember the power state setting when you cycle power or do you have to turn it on every time using the keypad? the answer is No, Cyron unit does not remember the power state setting. Regardless the state was off or on, it will always turn on the LED whenever you restart your car.

    2) if you leave it in the 'on' state then turn the car off, when you power the car on again does the unit turn on automatically? the answer is Yes. The other case: you leave it 'off' state, then turn the car off, when you power the car on again, the Cyron unit (LED) turn on automatically.

Another observation, when set your color of choice, then turn off the unit for period of time (I tried for 3 days), it remembers the last color setting you chose.

Thanks SiliconHybrid! This is the news I was looking for. Basically the unit does not remember the last power state setting - it turns itself on when power is applied and you have to force it off by pressing the button on the remote. This is perfect for this application. I bet the color choice setting gets stored in eeprom so it's going to remember it forever (until it's changed, at least).

After reading your post, I decided to put my green Neon light project on hold and give these a try. I'm curious to see how bright they are compared to the neon lamps. The 15" tube length is a bit long (I'd prefer around 9-10") but since you made it work it is possible. I also finished my timer circuit and verified the signaling from the dome lamp circuit last weekend so I'm going to tap in there and put a 10 second delay so they turn on with the domes and off 10 seconds after the dome lights extinguish. I'm also planning an auxiliary switch down by the 'SKS Key' switch to turn them on manually. I'll probably run the Cyron remote to the hidden drawer under the center console so it's hidden away yet easily accessible.

Ok, that is simply too cool. Unfortunately for me, I have not talent when it comes to doing anything like that (I'd be terrified of screwing something up). Still, I'd love to do that to my Prius!

Nice job and great explanation. I might have to give it a go.

Ok, I finally finished my lighting installation and the write up. It is majorly awesome and worth doing. I love the random color setting and the way it lights up the interior is ... well you just have to see it.

I tied the controller into the dome light circuit (with a delay timer, though) so it turns on and off after the interior lights, and activates to bring up the interior lights when approaching with the Smart Key.

    Enjoy!

These are just wicked cool! I may have to go for this. Didn't look at the pdf yet, where did you get the light kit and how much? Thanks.

I was looking over the PDF tonight and caught a few minor errors that crept into the schematic. It looks like I pulled an older schematic pdf instead of the most recent when I put together the instruction. The errors are minor and mainly just text in the schematic that doesn't match the parts list. Also the pin number callout for the control signal in the timing diagram doesn't match the pin number in the connector. The blue accessory control line is pin 2 not pin 5 as listed in the text above the timing diagram. I'll make the corrections on Monday and upload a new pdf.

[Edit] The corrected pdf file has been uploaded.

I haven't visited this site for a while.

SPARKY... that is wicked cool... GREAT documentation too.

After a couple of months having this Cyron units, I found the color setting I like (in order of preference): Turquoise, purple, blue, green.
I hate Red hahaha... it just hurts my eyes.

Thank you - I couldn't have done it without some of your photos! I think this turned out much better than the green neon lighting I was originally considering. It was a lot of fun (and work) putting this together but maybe will give others some inspiration to try it.

I don't care for the red either - it's just too dim and doesn't make the interior look good. I agree that the Turquoise is one of the best colors, along with the deep blue or green. I like to let it run on the slow delay color scan.

 Sparky, what is the chance of making up the circuit boards needed for the timer for us less than competent Modifiers? I would rather pay you than my EE brother! Have pity on your PriusChat bro's that are schematic challenged:D
