wachovia bank is a bunch of liars and thieves

    wachovia bank failed to screw me over :)

    i put $280 cash in an atm envelope to make a deposit a week or so ago. this was our christmas money. that was mistake number two- never put cash in an atm envelope. mistake number one was ever dealing with wachovia in the first place.

    well funny enough, i should have expected, they say i only put in $180. i filed a dispute and the dispute center claims that all the paperwork is consistent with the deposit.

    i have spent upward of 3 hours on the phone and 2 hours in the branch in person. the atm dispute center claims that their research is complete and i have to take it up with the branch manager. i ask, well what if the teller stole the cash? they say they don't know, they just check written records against amounts entered into their computer system. the branch manager will have to view the tape, they do not have access to it.

    the branch manager claims the atm research department is the only research that can be done and that i obviously only put $180 in the envelope. she claims there is no record of which teller made the adjustment or counted the envelope. they are all on tape, but she does not know which one counted my money.

    funny she changed her tune real quick when i told her I KNEW there were records of which person who signed off on the count, the atm research department TOLD me they have IMAGES they can fax to her if needed. all of a sudden she will "view the tape and get back to me by 5pm today." i threatened to bring in a lawyer if need be. i have no idea how we'll back that threat up, but i will not stand by while a big institution steals $100 from us. not with the current situation, maybe if i had a lot of money and didn't care.

    this is a very bad time to lose $100 out of the blue for us, and i'm absolutely furious.

    i thought i'd share my story in case you were considering ever dealing with these liars and thieves. once all my checks clear, i'm canceling all relations with these bastards.

    Oh man, that really sucks, galaxee. There used to be a philosophy among businesses called "The customer is always right". Unfortunately the modern version seems to be "The customer is a pain in the nice person & deserves to be screwed".

    I hope you manage to get your money back. I'd file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, too.

    thanks proco. i have to go by there to make a cash deposit in person this afternoon anyway, i'll take it up with her then. i'm trying to finish up with today's work first.

    i don't think she knows she's biting off more than she can chew here, because i'm ruthless. i'm not afraid of things getting ugly.

    Wow, that's awful. I'm sorry it happened, Galaxy.

    I hate banks, seriously. We only bank with a credit union, and they've been great (DH has been with them for like 20 years)... but our kids have used other banks, and every single one of them has horror stories.

    You go, girlfriend... let them feel your wrath!

    I just logged back on to say the same thing. I've known nothing but credit unions since I was a kid and have had great experiences. It probably has something to do with them being not-for-profit ... the customer is actually more than a customer.

    Definitely check if there's a credit union in your area. Check with your school/employer. Many times there's a CU association in place.

    we're moving things over to a bank that's run by the company my mom works for. they have a long track record of high ethical standards. i like credit unions too, but the issue is accessibility when we're visiting somewhere 8 states away.

    What a crock. Sorry to hear that happened.
    Sounds like at your next institution you will be making all your deposits in person.

    I hope you get this favorably resolved. I also hope you climb up the ladder with your complaints and fights. It also sounds like just the thing that a news channel "on your side" piece would like getting in to the middle of.

    "If you make ATM deposits, beware!" I think that would be a great commercial lead-in.

    Handing over unconfirmed amounts of cash, either in an envelope or in a paper bag to a teller and then just walking away is, as you have discovered, asking for problems. That was your one and only mistake.

    Wachovia, as financial institutions go, consistently rates amongst the very highest in customer satisfaction ratings. Wachovia couldn't maintain that record if their corporate policy was to steal money out of their customers ATM deposit envelopes. Somewhere along the line you probably got an unethical teller who felt they needed the money more than you - but that is no reason to blame an entire corporation with a good reputation because you broke banking rule #1.

    I bank at both Wachovia and The Golden One Credit Union (one of the largest and best rated credit unions in the nation). In my personal dealings, Wachovia consistently beats the credit union for service and friendliness. The branch manager and most of the tellers know me by name. At the Golden One only one teller knows me by name because he had to fix a major mistake and lack of follow-up by another teller.

    Just because one teller at The Golden One made a major mistake doesn't mean I would call for a boycott of the place. But in no way would I hand over unconfirmed amounts of cash to either place and say as I was walking away, "tell me the amount later."

    I have to agree... Nowadays, thieves are going to be found everywhere, even at reputable co-ops and credit unions, charities, etc. unfortunately :(

    Sorry for your hassle Galaxy.
    A another ripoff is how banks put a hold on funds for deposited checks.
    California passed a state law protecting consumers because banks would hold funds from local checks and out of state checks for 11 business days even though the funds have cleared electronically .The banks collect interest on these funds while they are in limbo.
    I just deposited a large out of state check and my bank of 20 years tells me they release the first $5000 after 2 business days,the balance they hold for 11 business days.
    This is blatantly illegal .Its not that big a deal for me at this time,It's the principle.When consumers are screwed en masse,it makes for a considerable theft of funds.
    I am considering calling the attorney general's ( Jerry Brown)office to report them.

    their customer satisfaction ratings were among the reasons we chose to bank with them in the first place, but last year we had a number of major inconveniences thanks to them. just 2 weeks ago we nearly got evicted from our house because their online bill pay service screwed up. the customer service lady had the gall to blame ME, when they sent the thing out 3 weeks late. i had to ask for a refund, which they told me would take 7-10 business days. i told them i was going to court to get evicted the next day, they needed to do better. after talking to a couple of supervisors, i got an immediate credit to my account and had to take time off work to go deliver it in person.

    well, that's what i'm asserting at this point. however, the branch manager FLAT OUT LIED to me about there being no records of who was counting my envelope. they are on tape, she said, but she told me she did not know which teller got my envelope so she could not verify the cash count.

    she only recanted when i told her i had been on the phone with the atm research department who could fax her the teller id number from the transaction if necessary. this lady has done the absolute bare minimum and only because i caught her in a lie, but at least she's done it with a cheerful smile on her face. :rolleyes:

    you're right, that was a mistake. it was too late to do it in person and i was already at the atm. but whatever happened to TRUST and ACCOUNTABILITY? everything is on videotape, and yet they refuse to use it and instead prefer to just tell me that i'm lying.

    i am experiencing neither trust nor accountability, what i'm seeing is refusal to help and arrogance that i should suggest they are wrong. THAT is bad business practice, i don't care what your customer service rating is.

    well i squeaked and i got oiled alright :D

    i thought for sure that we were just screwed, but apparently my mention of contacting lawyers made an impact. she could not prove anything with the video tape, and the $100 has been restored to our account.

    i thanked the lady kindly for her time but will not do business with them again.

    I was thinking that the next transaction you would have with them would be to issue a certified check for the total amount in your account.

    Yeah. I'm surprised you didn't close out all of your accounts right then and there.

    I've been at a credit union for decades. Yes, out of state is inconvenient. But they are part of some cooperative system. STAR or something. I'll usually use VISA or traveller's checks when traveling.

    You've had two run ins in the last couple months. Time to change banks. And when you do, tell them exactly why.

    i have to wait for all my checks to clear before i close out... just paid all the bills via check this month. don't trust their bill pay service anymore.

    also have to get confirmation that my direct deposit is cancelled. the holiday season slows everything down.

    Recently, I have done exactly that at two banks because of poor customer service. Marched in there and complained to the manager and got no satisfaction. Closed my accounts , got a certified check and moved everything over to a great credit union. They know me by name and value members' satisfaction. And much better percentage rates on my money.

    Anyway, so sorry to hear about the problem you had, especially at the holidays. Nothing like an eviction notice to make Christmas grim.

    Does your ATM require that you enter in the amount you're depositing? Is that on record? It's good you got your money back, but if you said you deposited $280 when prompted by the ATM, then it came up $100 short and you complained, I'd think they'd work harder to investigate if there was anything wrong.

    I once had an ATM that jammed up and only let me pry out $20 of my $80 deposit. I noticed the video camera that tapes you every time you make a transaction, so I just waved my $20 in front of the camera, took note of the time, called the bank 800-number immediately, then told them what happened and when it happend. It was relatively painless to have them investigate their footage to see they needed to issue me a refund (though I'm sure they had several more complaints that night).

    I'm surprised the bank didn't have you arrested for prying out money from your 'deposit.' :)

    I am also surprised that banks are not required to have electronic money readers in ATMs. If they can be placed in every vending machine, they can't be prohibitively expensive. No more unverified envelopes. The reader would verify authenticity, monetary amount, serial number, and time of deposit. - If that were the case, I'd consider using ATMs for cash deposits.
