I have developed a quiet ratcheting sound when turning and accelerating uphill at the same time. This happens most when turning right. I do not accelerate rapidly. It does not seem to happen when hard accelerating on straight level roads. It sounds like a cv joint to me but I'm not a cv joint expert. Has anyone experienced this. A long search of past threads here turned up nothing on this.

That does sound like a CV joint.

I'm thinking the same. If you have some miles on it then a CV joint issue would be likely. Take a peek under the car and if any of the boots are torn or you see grease spread about then it's almost surely a CV joint.

Does anybody know what the repair cost for this might be?

not sure on the cost of the axle, DH never priced one, but labor should be 1-2 hours.

On our old Nissan 200sx (similar size engine) I think the replacement parts were under $100/side for rebuilt units. It comes as the entire axle and you give them your old one as a core. I would guess the Toyota parts might be similar in cost. I put them in myself so I don't know what a shop would charge for labor, but this is standard maintenance for any car that has this type of axle so if you call the shop or dealer they should be able to quote you a price over the phone.
