China's first self-produced hybrid-power sedan, the Jiexun-HEV, rolled off the production line on Thursday at a Chang'an Automobile plant in Chongqing. It is expected to be put onto the market soon.
A Ministry of Science and Technology official said the new sedan was developed using China's self-owned intellectual property rights in terms of the engine, hybrid power system and the car as a whole. This marked the mastering of core technologies in hybrid-power system by a Chinese auto enterprise.

The full article is very short on details, not even a photo, but the news is interesting.

One thing I know over the years is that you never believe in what communists said.
There is no news in China. Only propaganda in a country that has no free press.

    No pictures?
I wonder why ? Could it be because it looks exactly like a Prius? China wouldn't really do that, of course.

Everyone knows it's SUPER easy to bring a law suit in a communist regime. Look how successful Disney has been protecting THEIR copyrights:

Thanks Allannde, especially for bringing this thread back on topic.

(Interesting how the initial informative post and thread immediately morphed or was hijacked into a thread for off topic China bashing and red baiting worthy of movement to FHOPolitics.)

Thankyou for your wisdom in distinguishing how/why Chinese manufacturer's theft of intelectual property rights and quality issues are inextricably distinct from the topic of the 'possibility' of making a production hybrid vehicle, someday. I apoligize for insulting your sensibilities with my foolishness.

Here, let me give you your pad response:
    Wow! That's great ! ! A chinese hybrid ! ! Isn't that exciting ! ! I can't wait ! ! Neet ! !

I was in China early this year (Beijing, Haerbin and Xian), and if any country can use hybrids it's China.

    1) The pollution is just incredible. My wife and I took carbon-impregnated 'duck-bill' facemasks and were very, very glad. While it looked like most of the pollution was coming from coal-burning (we went in Winter), a lot must come from their cars.

    2) The traffic moves very slow. Classic stop-start motoring that is ideal for a hybrid.

From what I understand (and I have no links to back this up), China is introducing emission requirements that mean they won't be able to import American cars as they won't meet the strict emission requirements! I really, really hope China can go as green as they can as quickly as they can or we're all in a lot of trouble.

    :)

I wonder if they paint the cars with lead-based paint...

Yeah the pollution in the big cities are just ridiculous. Any of you think L.A. is bad, you haven't seen China. And don't think any of that is their problem cause they are to the west of us. Stuff will dissipate but some will make it over the entire ocean.

I think this is what it looks like.

[IMG]As close to a cutaway as I can find.
Looks like a Honda style mild hybrid to me.

Everything's mounted so low. Good in a collision and for centre of gravity I suppose.

Is that engine sideways or is it just the engine cover design that makes it look like it's sideways (plus it's very similar to a VW engine cover).

    Sideways?
I think you will find it's an east west orientation. (Like most modern front wheel drive cars except Subaru)

traverse? yes although there are a number of longituditally oriented engines.

It's just that the engien cover looks like a VW cover turned 90°

It's not just China, seems many of those asian countries that are heavily populated (gee who'd a thunk population = pollution :D)... the g/f is from Taiwan and she would tell me stories of how you could walk from the airport across the street in a white shirt, and by the time you got to your hotel it'd be a brown shirt, NASTY!

I truly hope the emissions thing is true, and it's not a ploy to further attack the US economically. Lest China pony up and agree they shouldn't be classified as a third world developing nation as far as pollution standards are set. Besides I'd guess most of their pollution is from coal not cars.

Working in the electronics field here in the US, I'm aware that China (and other Asian countries) and EU has ROHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) regulations, but the US does not! When designing electronics, we are following environmental regulations of other countries. I just think it's ridiculous that we are so behind . Some might have criticism about ROHS (tin whisker), that's another can of worm...
