This made the headlines in Winnipeg yesterday, a drunk guy carjacked a Prius taxi and got into a pretty serious crash. The photos appear to have disappeared, the Prius front end is smooshed pretty good but the passenger cell is ok. The car he rearended needed the Jaws to open up the doors

Not sure why folks think a Prius is hard to drive. If a s***faced guy can take off in one, why can't a carwash or oil change employee figure it out?

    Drunk no less lol.

This is the second time a Prius "crashed" and made the news. The other was that one that crashed into a convenience store?

There was that tragic, high-speed crash outside of LA in which a young woman killed herself and the other driver.

Could any of the 'smart key' technology have immobilized the vehicle?

Not if the car was already turned on.

The hard part is not the driving of it. The hard part is knowing how to shut it off so it doesn't drive away by itself when you leave it in Drive and turned on and take your foot off the brake and get out.

Note that in this case the drunk did not attempt to stop the car in the normal manner.

Hmmm I can imagine the conversation the drunk had with himself

"Burp, how the heck do you stop one of these crazy hybrid cars?"

    CRASH

As an update, it looks like the immigrant cab driver lost his job because the Prius was totalled. Like the driver was supposed to risk his life over a car?

Oddly enough, there are no lawyers rushing to the aid of this immigrant who went through a terrifying carjacking. I bet there are plenty of lawyers rushing to aid the drunk

I didn't say that stopping the car was difficult. I said that shutting it off properly so it would not roll away might confuse a parking valet or car-wash kid.

You said if a drunk could steal a Prius, a car-wash kid should be able to drive it. But the drunk is not worried about shutting the car off properly, whereas I am very concerned that a car-wash kid not let my car roll away. (Which is why I don't let car-wash kids or parking valets drive my car.)

The drunk won't need a lawsuit. The socialist/communist No Fault public insurance we have here - MPIC Manitoba Public Insurance Co, a Provincially owned public corp AKA "AutoPac" - will bend over backwards helping the drunk

If he got hurt, he will even qualify for lifetime disability payments. Certainly the crop of 12-15 year olds responsible for most of the car theft in Winnipeg are getting lifetime disability checks if the little darlings manage to hurt themselves in a high speed pursuit

The guy who was almost knifed in the carjacking, who lost his job over the fact the Prius taxi was stolen and totalled, is SOL. Matter of fact ... oh, better not get me started. I just might pop a vein
