Hey folks; I realize I'm very new to the site and as such I'd like to offer a bit of my time to anyone here as a token way of saying thanks for the warm welcome to the site and thanks for hearing out my inane babbling.

So, if you like the transparency effect I've added to my avatar and would like the same treatment for yours, PM me and if possible include a higher-resolution version of your avatar as well as a description of what you'd like removed (in the case of mine I removed all background but the car's shadow) and I'll PM you back the retouched flavor of your avatar.

I know it's not much of anything to offer, but it's the first thing that comes to mind!

    Thanks again all,

    ~ dan ~

    I don't see a transparency effect, I see a few raggedy white
spikes around the edge. What's it trying to do/be?

    Does look good to me.
And that's a mighty friendly gesture.

    Dan,

I'm a bit slow to review some posts, and I've just come upon your generous offer to help people with their avatars. Instead of a more personal avatar, I've opted for various pictures I've taken in among the Coastal Redwoods (and other places of great wonder), so I don't know that I can take you up on your offer. Nonetheless -- Thanks for offering your service to the community.

The depressing part is that nobody's taken me up on the offer yet. Does my avatar look THAT bad to some people? I'd be interested in seeing what hobbit sees, with raggedy white edges; I don't see that on mine, and I used Photoshop or The Gimp or something to do the cleaning.

But I'd love to offer it up for people, or maybe to offer it to the web site, perhaps cleaning a series of Prius or Prius part pictures (how about a Toyota logo or a steering wheel or MFD or something) people could choose from?

I'm wondering if you would like to create some "stock" avatars for the site. Maybe a Prius in each color? You can get all the pictures here, but they don't have transparency:

Don't worry about Hobbit. I think he uses lynx most of the time so he don't see much but colored text anyway. Thats if he even uses color. :D

Ooh, having some stock avatars would be very much appreciated! I just don't seem to be very creative about these things!

If I had more time, I'd have put a faint transparency effect on the windows. In fact, I'm gonna work on that now :p

might be the OS or visual settings. transparencies are the first to go if one selects the "performance" option in the system settings. also a major diff in appearances bet xp and vista (so im told, i have glanced at vista and didnt see a whole lot to crow about...)

How about add tinted windows? Black would look awesome with tint.

    transparency in browsers

It looks great on Firefox version 2.0 on XP, but in IE 6 the transparent color doesn't quite match the background color (you have to look close to see it, but it's more of an aqua blue, at least on my Samsung LCD display). I definitely don't see any raggedy edges. If I remember, I'll try this out on Mac Safari and IE 7 on XP at home.

That's really interesting, because the transparent pixels are set to 100% transparent (technically opacity is set to zero); and PNG is a well-supported, standardized format.

    Weird.
