Hi all, I have the 2008 Prius OEM HID (D4R bulbs). I recently purchased some 6000k replacement bulbs (D2R Philips Ultinons) and put them in the car. The 6000k bulbs will turn on (so I know they're not bad bulbs), but after like 3 seconds, they turn off automatically... I have to turn them off and then turn them on again. However they only ever stay on for 3 seconds at a time. Can anyone shed some light on the subject and maybe explain why or what is going on? I know the D4R and D2R bulbs are different but I am under the impression that the only difference is the contents (mercury vs. mercury free) and the contacts and bulb housing are all the same so there shouldn't be an issue. I've since put back the OEM 4300k D4R bulbs in the car. They still work just fine. Thanks in advance! This forum has been most helpful!
they're electrically too different to work with the newer mercury-free system. the ballast can't handle it.
I am interested in putting the 6000k in mine to, so is it possible to find 6000k mercury free D2R HID lights?
i have a pair that are approx. 3 months old. i am replacing them with the stock ones on wednesday. i would be willing to sell them for half the cost i paid for them. i just don't care for the 6000k's. hit me back on a PM if you're interested.
If that is the case then why do all the D2R sellers say their D2R bulbs are direct replacement for D2S/D2R/D2C/D4R? I don't get it... what is the real difference? I mean, they turn on but just won't stay on Charles
"HID headlamp bulbs do not run on low-voltage DC current, so they require a ballast with either an internal or external ignitor. The ballast controls the current to the bulb. When the headlamps are switched on, the ignitor provides rapidly pulsed current at several thousand volts to initiate the arc between the electrodes within the bulb. Once the arc is started, its heat begins to vapourise the metallic salts within the arc chamber, and the ballast gradually transitions from startup operation to arc-maintenance operation. Once the arc is completely stabilised, the ballast provides 85 V in conventional D1 and D2 systems, or 42 V with Mercury-free D3 and D4 systems." found on neowin.net
HID-D4R headlights and extended warranty coverage Hi All!! I have a 2006 prius that is nearing the end of the manufacturers warranty. I really like the car for many reasons. My big question is: Where to get the headlights reasonably priced and an extended warranty that covers everything including HID-D4R's and goes beyond 100k, or do I really need a warranty? Re: HID-D4R headlights and extended warranty coverage I doubt your find a warranty that covers light bulbs. They are maintenance. IMO an extended warranty is not needed. Take the $1000 and invest it.
