I've had my Prius for a couple of weeks now. Everything great so far except the drivers position. I am 6'1" , so just a little taller than average. The seat height is non-adjustable and if I don't rake the seat back or slump down in the seat a little, I am looking out of the top 10% of the windshield. Unusually poor design considering I fit very well into all my other cars I've had.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(airphoto @ Nov 25 2007, 09:45 AM) </div> I agree, the seat is unusally high compaured to other models. although I am used to more sportier cars with bucket seats.
I have found the seat to be the one really significant down side to the Prius. It's amazing the work that went into the engineering the rest of the car, but I think they sent an intern down to the dollar store to get a seat for this vehicle. It seems to be the improper height for lots of folks, and in my case the total lack of any kind of back support has been, well, a real pain in my back. I was able to get a lumbar support that mostly helps. My older, less expensive Subaru had an infinitely better seat (with adjustable lumbar support), and I wish Toyota at least offered an upgraded seat as an option. It's kind of sad to have a brand new car with a lumbar pillow and towel (for some additional padding) sitting in the driver seat.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(airphoto @ Nov 25 2007, 11:45 AM) </div> I have my 2008 Prius for a couple days now, seems ok for me cause I am 5ft 10. Well, may be we have to remember Prius is Made In Japan, they might forgot about their height comparing with other non Japanese people. As I remember in Tokyo Airport, when I passed through Japan Custom, they have their chairs set on a platform before ; well may be now they adjust their office chairs' gas lift much higher than us. But, I agree about the requirement for updating all seats inside cause I remember when I had my Madza in 1986, there was all kinds of adjustment and lumbar support by then, almost 22 years since then.
I am only 6 foot tall but have a long torso and find that reclining the seat makes the car very comfortable. Plus it takes a load off of the lower spine.
There are after market seats. I know it should be right from the get go but I'm considering after market seats although I find the seats of the Prius get more comfortable on longer drives. I'm a little fat bloke, about 5'6" in the old money.
someone posted a pic here a week or so ago that showed the uk prius had a hidden mechanical height adjuster!!!! i guess thats another thing uk or asia prius cars have that we dont
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(airphoto @ Nov 25 2007, 11:45 AM) </div> I was able to buy my Prius because it was ordered by someone who was too tall for it when it arrived. I'm 5'1" and sometimes I think I need a pillow. I suppose it would be helpful if the seat height was adjustable.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(rigormortis @ Nov 26 2007, 11:04 AM) </div> It's not very well hidden it's that big lever on the side of the seat It lowers the back more than the front to support tall legs knees B)
I'm also a new owner, the same height, and agree on the seat....in addition it doesnt travel far enough back and the base is at the wrong angle for me (and many others). Put some washers under the front mounts (longer bolts are needed too) and that improved the base angle considerably. There are some fixes for the seat height and travel that can be found by searching here, but they are not simple (some require seat disassembly, welding, etc), but I plan to try them soon and will post the results if it all works out...
The height of the seats is a big reason my mom and I bought the car! She had both knees replaced, and it was very difficult for her to get into our Camry. The Prius has been just perfect for both of us (my long legs appreciate the high seat as well!). I do wish the seat went back a little farther (with a telescoping steering wheel, as I have long legs but not gorilla-length arms). However, I've taken several LONG trips in this car, and I find it to be very comfortable. To each his/her own.....
I want, I want! The seats are the only real complaint I have of my Prius, I wish the seat were between 1-3" lower and the front tilted up a bit more. Some additional side/thigh bolstering wouldn't hurt, either, but now I'm dreaming.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(prius2008 @ Nov 26 2007, 08:28 AM) </div> Height adjustable driver's seat is standard on every Prius sold here in Sweden, even the base model.
Also standard on Australian Prius. I have it on my 2004 base model. The seat still is very flat and high even when the height adjuster is all the way down.
