The DVD is very easy to copy. Just use a raw imager like winimage and a good burn engine like nero.

However, the 2007 disc won't work in an 05. 04-05 are the same, 06-07 are the same, but they are different to each other.

Would I be able to use a 6.1 disk from an 07 Camry in my 06 Pri? The MFD screen on the Camry looks lower res, but that may be just my imagination. I'm not sure if there's a hardware difference or if it matters.

I checked out an upgrade DVD disk on eBay and located a 5.1 version for $129. However, I checked with my local Toyota dealer who said that early in 2007 Toyota would be coming out with an updated version. Unfortunately, he said that it would cost $300!

I just went and looked in my car and I have the 0.51 version on my 2006 prius. Is this the newest version? Do the Toyota Dealers sell the most updated versions?

Proud Prius Owner 1 year today! :D

My '05 version is 4.2, and I understand the new version coming out is 6.1.

There may be a difference. Don't forget, when ordering a new DVD, make sure it's for your year car. There are two versions of the 5.1 & 6.1. One's for the 2004-2005 and one is for the 2006+.

I recently saw this ad on EBay:

GENUINE TOYOTA/LEXUS NAVIGATION UPGRADE DVD FOR

GENERATION 4 SYSTEMS. RELEASED JANUARY 2007.

    VERSION NUMBERS ON DISC:
    86271-33046
    464210-0780
    DATA Ver.06.1

    PART NUMBERS ON THE PACKAGE:

    86271-33046

    00110-DVD06-GEN4

THE DISC WORKS WITH THE FOLLOWING LEXUS VEHICLES:

    LS430 2004, 2005, 2006
    GS430 2006
    GS300 2006
    ES300/330 2004, 2005, 2006
    RX300/330 2005, 2006
    LX470 2004, 2005, 2006
    SC430 2005, 2006
    GX470 2005, 2006

THIS DISC WORKS WITH THE FOLLOWING TOYOTA VEHICLES:
    Land Cruiser 2004, 2005, 2006
    4Runner 2005
    Prius 2004, 2005
    Camry 2004, 2005, 2006
    Sienna 2005
    Sequoia 2005, 2006
    Solara 2004, 2005, 2006
    Tundra 2005, 2006
    Highlander 2004, 2005, 2006

...by the way, they were asking $225 for the disk.

So we have at least one part number that will work. There are several other ads for vers.6.1 disks with similar, but slightly different part numbers. I wonder if any of them would work also?

I've searched Toyota's website, but I can't find the answer anywhere....

That's correct -- what matters is the generation of your Nav system. In 04-05 Prius' the system is Gen4. In older Prius' it's Gen3. I couldn't find anyone at Toyota to confirm that the 06-07 Prius has Gen5, but that sounds like what's going on.

This would apply to other model Toyota's also; what matters is the Nav generation -- so if you can find out what that is, it might be possible to take a DVD advertised for, say, the 2006 RX300 and use it in your 05 Prius -- just find out the generation of the Nav. If it's a match, then it should work in your system.

Does anyone with an 04/05 Prius have the 6.1 update?
Maybe I shouldn't be posting this here, but could somebody help me out and burn me a copy? I don't think it's a matter of right and wrong, because honestly, is $250 reasonable for a DVD?

Please note that with the 6.1 you lose the ability to do the override trick, unless the copy has the 4.1 or 5.1 startup info (kwi?) instead of the one for 6.1.

Now that Google Earth shows my house instead of just a lot off the end of the unfinished road, I guess within a few years I could see the same thing on an upgrade. It'd be nice to be more current, but I'll continue to put it off and hope that when I go someplace the roads won't have changed for 10 years or so...

I was reading about that. I'm assuming this is a 'fan made'...I couldn't think of a better term to refer it to, DVD? That would be nice to have a 6.1 disc, with the 5.1 override features.

I just bought a '07, Package #5, and love the car.

I can only find one or two things that I would like to tweak and both are related to the NAV system, and this forum has been very helpful to read about one of them--how to override the system while driving.

But I haven't seen what to do about this other problem I have with the NAV guidance in rural areas.

I live in a VERY rural area in North Alabama and when we use the navigation system on county roads it says that voice (and usually turn by turn visual) guidance will not be available along this route. This is really important to us since our kids have ball games all over the northern part of the state.

I have a portable TomTom Navigation GPS that works great on my Treo 700p. It doesn't do "text to speech" but it does tell you to turn right at the next road, and shows you the name of the road even in the most rural areas.

My concern is for my wife's safety as she drives when we meet at the games and have to drive separately from work. She had a car break down on one of these roads last fall when she was going to the game (no lights on the road, two lanes, no residences close by).

Any suggestions on how to get the absolute best navigation update available that would at least give turn by turn directions in rural areas even if the names of the roads were not announced?

Thanks for your suggestions. Great discussion forum!
    Malcolm

Give her your Tom Tom. The stand alone units seem to be better than Toyota's system and cheaper. This is why I'm satisfied with my package 3. My Garmin cost less than Toyota's DVD.

I agree with JimN. I have had several different vehicles with GPS and also owned a stand alone Garmin.
I have had Ford Explorer GPS, Nissan Altima GPS, Pioneer Avic Z1 (my current one) GPS, and the Garmin Street Pilot. The stand alone Garmin beats them all.
It is the nature of the beast so to speak... The stand alones can be readily updated, and are aimed at that market too, yet the "stock" nav units all require expensive DVD's to update and when they finally do come out with a new DVD, it is still not as accurate as the stand alone units. One day perhaps they will use the actual satellite to do on the fly updates. That would be great. A kind of Wiki for GPS!

I found someone selling a few of the Gen4 v6.1 DVDs for $83 shipped.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYOTA-LEXU...sspagenameZWDVW

It could be a scam - I've got PayPal and eBay dispute if it is.

Please let us know if you receive this and it works. $83 sounds reasonable.

    Thanks!
