Honda has an absolutely massive manufacturing presence in the USA and has been here like Toyota and many other foreign Automobile Manufacturers' employing USA citizens making vehicles in the USA, for the USA for the last 40 years.

The entire Southeast USA is home to massive Automotive Manufacturing Facilities for Hyundai, KIA, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, BMW ,VW etc (as well as GM and Ford). Building vehicles and bringing prosperity to those communities - this doesn't even begin to bring to light the thousands of supporting part manufactures and suppliers for these economic powerhouses.

I don't pretend to know (or at least try not to pretend to know) what I don't.

To be honest, the whole tariffs thing seems quite complicated. While one can research what cars are manufactured here in the USA, that doesn't eliminate tariffs on the parts that might be imported to be used on those cars. Some parts apparently cross the boarder several times during their fabrication, which would rack up multiple tariffs.

My thought is I'll have to wait to find out how this will all play out. Some say it won't affect hardly anything for Americans, others are saying that it could make cars cost $10,000 more on average, including ones built here. I really don't know, but I'm sure we'll all find out in the coming months and years.

The Prius could easily be built in the USA if Toyota so desires - it just needs to allocate some of its USA Manufacturing to do that - however you begin to get into Model mix and profitability and does it make economic sense to build a low volume vehicle taking away Manufacturing space from higher volume more profitable models.

Toyota has already positioned itself very well for all of its battery production for its models to be done right here in the USA.

You don't need a complete analysis to understand that it is a tax on stuff.

If more of your family's income is spent on stuff (food, fuel, clothing etc) vs. being fed into savings or investment, then you are going to feel more of the impact.

In the short term, expect fewer choices at higher prices.

 

Looking down the road though it can be a plus. Consider how the space race started, with Sputnik vs USA. So many products came out of that - from advancements in computers to new material sciences.

 

The space race, the Interstate Highway System and the Internet came from government investments.

Eliminating government sponsored research will not be good for this country's future.

Everything the First Buddy's accomplishments were built on top of government investments and research.

 

Good part of the motive of State Highway system was due to the automotive industry (gm)pushing out the more efficient rail systems.

It won't be a short term.

Moving and reconfiguing manufacturing back to the US without imports will take years, even if that is possible.

 

That's a good point, as our society is much less resilient than it was in the 1940s when the USA was forced to do stuff on its own going into World War II. Roughly ½ the nation was rural prior to that event - & that lifestyle makes one quite hearty.

It couldn't have been done without the huge investment by the government advocated by President Eisenhower.

The only contribution by GM was to decimate the trolley systems to replace them with diesel busses after WWII.

 

And heavy Automotive lobbying by GM and the tire industry
