I think I have LED headlights?

    I bought a Prius Gen 3.

The headlights (low beams) are very bad. I drove on the highway for the first time the other night, it was terrifying I basically had no visibility at all more than 10ft in front of me.

I had to drive with my high beams on, which worked well.

I researched bulbs online and ordered a set.

Went to install and my light looks nothing like what I found in online videos.

The high beams are standard halogen, but the low beams to not look like a normal light.

I am going to pull the bumper and headlight tomorrow hopefully and see what is going on, but I suspect they are LED.

Can I replace the LED modules from factory with something better?

I have been able to confirm, I have LED headlights already (the high beam is not).

Very bad performance, from what I have read online so far there is no upgrading the LED lights. Can anyone prove me wrong and have seen an LED upgrade?

LED lamps usually give off quite a bright light. It is possible that someone has worked on the headlights with "naughty hands" before you and the light is not so bright.
What markings are on the headlights?

Some gen 3 Prii came with factory LED headlights. If they have the pair of round lenses, like this, they are the LED version.

If there is just one round lens, as in this busted one, it came with halogen bulbs from the factory.

If it's the factory LED version, the LEDs aren't replaceable; you just replace the unit.

If it's the factory halogen version, sometimes people replace the halogen low beam with an LED retrofit bulb. Last I checked, DOT was still working on new regulations for how to tell which of those are street legal, which technically none of them are until such a regulation gets made.

Yes, I have the pair of round lenses. I am going to test for the alignment of the bulbs, but super disappointed I can't upgrade because they were so bad the other night.

I have the Canadian factory LED version with my Prius Touring. You may have the Prius Touring or Prius Technology (with solar panels) trim.

I honestly don't think the factory LEDs are that bad. If you don't see the road light up, then you may want to check the aim. You can adjust a bolt to aim it up or down.

The LED version is the first picture in the post above. It is very easy to tell apart. Or look at my thumbnail portrait.

If you decide to replace the OEM headlight, just realize that it comes in a whole assembly and are worth about $700 to $1000 brand new each.

Yeah check against @ChapmanF's pictures. If they're not the factory LED's, then they would just be replaceable bulbs, whatever they are. Note my avatar, there is a Priuschat website option for "Touring". I'm not sure about "Technology" having LED's though.

Attached is from Canadian gen 3 Prius brochure (something that's gone the way of the dodo now):

I will check the adjustment, but no way am I going to buy new OEM headlights. That is just too much, I only paid $4,500 for the car so I am not spending thousands to try and improve the headlights.

Have you checked yours is in fact a “Touring”? AFAIK that’s the only level with Toyota LED’s, from the factory.

The OP confirmed that he has LED low beams in post #5.

Was it raining, or was the road wet "the other night".

Maybe. His avatar says “base”, which may or may not be relevant.

A picture would be conclusive. <@gunsuka?

How about a tally? A regular Prius has “two” lens.

Again, a picture would cut through this Gordian Knot.

Our ‘10 is CDN Touring, with the LED’s (pic attached), going on 15 years, excellent brightness and no no change since day one. So colour me sceptical.

What I see in your attachment is one round lensless reflector (for the high beam) and two round lenses.

Let's wait on a pic from OP? You can dish out the humble pie if it comes to that, but OP's initial description of his headlight performance is at odds what I've experienced. Maybe frosted lens from UV, though he's "ruled that out". Yeah, a pic please.

I should have clarified. My Prius is a JDM that I imported, the cost of a Prius in Canada was just too high with too many miles on them. So I brought one from Japan.

I selected base on the PriusChat registration because I do not fit into the options available.

The Prius I got has heated leather seats, PCS, navigation (useless to me), parking assist, 17 inch rims, dynamic radar cruise control (not a Tesla, but nice feature) & heads up display.

AND apparently some type of LED headlights that I have not been impressed with so far. Driving in the city at night is fine because of the street lights.

Here are a couple pics of the front and back lights. I know the back lights are different than the North American models because there is much less red.

If it's JDM those headlights are probably optimized for the other side of the road.

There was a time I contemplated buying the LED headlights if I could find them cheap enough, and a member here was selling a pair, but at the last moment I realized they were JDM.

Just noticed post #17, that completely clears it up. They’re the stock LED’s. Looks like a poorly done headlight shell polish though, that might be a factor. As well as the JDM aim.
