2015, 91,200 miles. Oil change was only $10.39. Which things should I get done ASAP and which ones can wait? Obviously, I will be taking the car to my mechanic and not paying these prices
if you already paid $110 for an engine air filter and cabin air filter.....you're asking too late..... what in the world did you do with the car that you lost both inner wheel- well covers and the bottom underside cover? Did you have some type of off-road excursion that caused this damage?
Huh? These are all the issues they found with my car. Nowhere did I state I paid them and even have that I will take the car to my mechanic and see what he says right in my OP. I can put in a new engine and cabin filter myself. I am more worried about the axel and hybrid cooling system and other stuff out of my league. The fender liners just came off while I was driving. It was a crappy job from the previous owner to wherever he took the car to get fixed. I bought it salvaged so the accident he was in needed new liners and so now they have fallen off and I have none.
That's why they change your oil for $10.39....so they can "find" all kinds of things you "need" before your car falls apart. My 2915 has NO under covers at all and I've been driving it for 8 years like that...no problem and the oil changes are much easier too. Stay away from the dealership........all these prices seem exceedingly high for what you can have it done for elsewhere.
You can do all this with aftermarket parts for near nothing The wheel well liners and better plastic that's more flexible or I think I paid $18 a piece in the holes line up pretty good The hydra battery cooling fan is easy to access and easy to clean like blow water through it and blow it off with some air and let it sit in the sun and dry Make sure the duct work is clear all of this stuff is stuff my daughter can do.
WOW! I found a time traveler! On a Priuschat forum of all places. Can you show us a pic of what a 2915 Prius looks like? I am sure it flys right? I do think the axel and hybrid system sound like they are important though. I hope my mechanic knows how to fix or service them.
The HV fan is really easy to clean. If you have basic tools you can get it done no problem. Watch a few YouTube videos to see if its something you’re willing to tackle. It’s important especially if you have dogs. I would also recommend adding the screen that clips on the intake. Part # G92DH-47010 I would get a second opinion about the axle, watch this video first. Sounds like bait and switch, but that’s how they make big $$$ on cheap oil changes. The techs are required to find as many issues possible and the service advisors are just salesmen to add urgency and fear to close the deal. When I had to use the dealer for oil changes I would always leave with a $1,200 timing cover leak quote, which even now is not a big deal. Most of their service recommendations are literally just based on time/miles and they don’t even look at the parts. Like telling you need filters when you just replaced them (happened to me many times).
The last time I went to the dealership for an oil change, they wanted to replace the oil pan gasket [a 5-hour procedure that would take two days] and cost me $2500. My mechanic looked at it and said that the oil pan was the cleanest he had seen in months. All oil pans have a little oil on them.
I'm sure it looks better than my 2015! (bad typing) ...by 2915 we will be transporting ( like Spock and Kirk) and will not need cars any more! Axel would be important...if there is really anything wrong with it! Hybrid fan is very easy to do yourself.
Is this easy to you? We have different definitions of easy that's for sure. I definitely need to pay someone to do that. I do not have any pets.
It seems daunting for sure but I was able to get it done with no mechanical experience at all. I was so scared to do the egr system as well, literally had never even changed the oil in a push lawnmower. This site gave me the confidence and know how to do the egr, coolant, water pump, hv fan, hv bus bars and I change the oil every 5k. The only problem this has created is I have an addiction to buying new tools . I completely understand if you’re not comfortable with the job, just don’t do it at the dealer, sounds like you already have a trusted mechanic that works on your cars. I personally wouldn’t pay more than $100 labor for that job. You can start by buying that filter at your local dealership or online and clip that on yourself.
I got a lot of replies on reddit and the general consensus is to get the axle fixed(not replaced) and not really worry too much about anything else.
