I'd be elated if they'd just produce 100mi DC QC plugin hybrids - in both sedans, suv's & pickups. Them, or ANY manufacturer.

The car also appears to be a prototype for NASCAR EV racing. If it gets through the race today, without being pelted with beer cups, it's a start. ;):p

1975 .... ½ a century ago you could get a blazer with inches more ground clearance (even before putting on taller rubber), a spare tire, & a one-piece removable top. Time keeps moving on.

Definitely true mileage wise, but performance wise? Why not a plug-in version!?

I got 30 mpg in my 1972 VW Super Beetle. I did modify the engine to do that though.

That is about right. I got 28 MPG in a 1966 VW MicroBus back then. I kept a 'blue book' log and when it dipped down, I knew it was time to adjust the valve backlash.

First rebuild was a VW engine. High School Auto shop. Valves punched out a piston because they weren't kept tuned or so i thought at 1st. Turned out it was overheating.

    Can't give rednecks money.....
I'm glad that this car debuted on an open wheel track.
The only reason that it didn't make it onto a NASCAR track first is that there's no adult noise to go with the smoke.

It's like comparing Cuban cigars to a vape pen.......

Could get 100mpg if don't mind a car that would be undrivable on public roads.

Emissions saw a better improvement through the years. A gen1 Prius would beat your Super Beetle in efficiency, emissions, and a race.;)

No idea. Chevy jumped in with both feet based on political winds and Toyota competition.
When dealers complained about no hybrids, they said they would jump in again.
But with the current admin, I’m sure most everything is on hold.

Sure, things have gotten better in efficiency, longevity and safety, especially if we're talking about Toyotas, and especially especially if we're talking about Toyota hybrids.

What the Beetle did do better was it was cheaper, even when adjusted for inflation (at least certain years, I haven't checked all of them) and it was easier to work on. An air-cooled VW engine wasn't designed to get the life a modern Toyota engine does, but at least rebuilding one was and still is dirt cheap to do. The Beetle also came with a full sized spare. Also, and this is my personal opinion, there's nothing cuter than a classic Bug and they're much more fun to drive than any modern car.
