Share the wealth, I always say. We got a few plain loads ourselves in MT. still ... most of the dishwashers, busboys, landscapers, roofers, full service car wash, painters, maid servive etc are still of European ancestry.

We need the immigrants, but like most, lack affordable housing for that level of income

Migrant housing paid by the government. Raise prices to maximize profit.

We need LEGAL migrants like me from Canada. Not illegal/undocumented invaders. There are legal ways to get migrant farm help. if needed

The farmers need to apply for the proper visas for their workers.

H-2A Temporary Agricultural Workers | USCIS

I originally came to the US on a student visa and then later became a permanent resident and, finally, a US citizen.

Yes, but as someone who's involved in the immigrant and farming communities, I know how hard this really is.

Take one US citizen, for an example, that has spent the past 5 years trying to adopt his Mexican born nephews who were tragically orphaned.

It doesn't matter if they're tragically orphaned and living on a bathroom floor, if they're hard working workers, or anyone else, the paperwork is much harder than people assume, and the government at times way too reluctant to approve certain people for no apparent reason. If it were that easy there wouldn't be so many illegal immigrants here, most of whom are not criminals in any other sense. Immigration is a mess, and those who think "well just get them here legally" have no clue of how hard it is.

Note too, that most of the immigration "solutions" are temporary visas. But farms, construction, McDonald's and others would benefit from permanent employees, not workers who come in for three months and then you have to get someone else you now have to retrain.

Don’t use your own circumstances to draw a broad brush over the current (and decades old) immigration problems.
Congress dropped the ball a long time ago.
We will see how things shake out in a few years

The US citizen step literally took years. They even changed the laws within that time complicating matters. I did end up with an understanding interviewer though, eventually. I lost track of the number of times I had to submit fingerprints.

Once deported it will be hard to migrate back legally.

Just because a person ends up being deported doesn't mean they entered illegally. Like this thread that entered legally might be deported to FHOP.

    Legality doesn't mean morality.

...Maybe charge a 25% tariff on wages that go to foreign workers, but make it 50% if they work at an EV factory?...

There are some 10,500,000 to 12,000,000 million people in the USA without legal status. So replacing them with another 10,000,000 or so makes sense.

Not really after 20 immigration judges terminated by the new regime.

Ranks right up there with terminating IRS employees so there are less audits and less tax compliance and less income for the treasury. Having just completed my taxes and appreciating the complexity, I can only imagine the difficulty of keeping the uber rich honest.

(interesting that spell check offers cherubic as an option for uberrich.)

My wife was telling me last night how she, as a Treasury employee, had to be schooled in the responsibilities of accessing the treasury information on a citizen and what the penalties were for misuse. Bottom line was you were watched and you'd have to have justification to access a person's data.

My company developed a system for the FBI that monitored who accessed what in their data base so that it could be monitored. Never understood why that wasn't extended to all critical government data bases..

DOGE and their kiddies is another world from the world of government employees I worked with and knew for 50 years.

Many of the people here illegally got in legally on a student visa or similar. Musk himself was illegal at one point.

Hit employers with real punishment, and they'll make the effort to use legal means.
Then there are the companies that use the legal means to fire more expensive citizens.
It's a mess with plenty of blame for more than the poor trying to find a better life.

You mean “death-to-EV bills,” not “death to EV bills,” right? Because the bill seems quite alive. Perhaps @Tideland Prius should fix the title.

This administration, with all its crazy clowns, won’t last for too long. We will see double-digit inflation next year with the tariffs, and this time, it will be accompanied by high unemployment. And there is the insanity regarding the annexation of Canada, ethnically cleansed Gaza, Grønland, etc. We can only hope that the US and world can survive the next two years.
