Virginia currently had a Democrat government with a Republican governor. Those fees happened when we had a Democrat governor too.

Cow towing to industry? Voters? Republicans? Lobbyists?
We should pay our fair share imo, but it should be all vehicles based on miles and mileage

What about weight? 1,000 miles in a 1972 VW Beetle isn't going to cause near as much road wear as a 1,000 miles in a 60,000 GVWR dump truck.

Are we raising funds for road repair or trying to incentivize or disincentivize certain factors like pollution and/or safety or are we trying to do both?

The problem with politics is even if a good idea gets in there, the next administration will just give the executive order to remove it, kind of like when Ronald Regan removed the solar panels from off the White House (IIRC).

In a way I suppose, but it’s just different philosophies.
We aren’t going to change the world, but I like to do my part.
Much worse than that is the 40 cents per kWh we pay around here

Yes, weight should be included in the equation

Agreed, as long as it is tied to how much damage the weight does to the road.
For example, on an interstate a 1500lb car does virtually the same damage as a 3000lb vehicle. So don’t charge the 3000lb car twice as much.

Those very large Vehicles already pay large amounts of Road tax. The rationale for our personal gassers is - if you have a heavy & large vehicle it will use more gas. Not so with an EV until someone figures a way to make you pay at the charging socket.

We were notified that electric is going up around here, effective June 1st. LED bulbs and power strips help a little bit.

What helps me is I never use electric heat (unless a blanket) nor do I use A/C. No electric stove, no electric hot water heater, etc. Natural gas is much cheaper.

Electric stoves Or Electric Appliance cost to run turns on the cost of your natural gas/propane - versus electricity. The cost to purchase electricity in some areas is a bargain still - even compared to Natural Gas. But yea that's not the general rule.

Installing a heat pump heating unit might make electricity more feasible. Here electricity is cheap compared to some places. It's around 11 cents per kWh. But natural gas here is even cheaper. I don't spend more than some $60 per month on each, so less than $120 per month for heating and cooking.

Cowards really need to increase the federal gas tax. Hasn't changed from 18.4 cents since 1993. It's effectively 8 cents today.
I think it was an EV owner that sponsored the bill in Pennsyslvania.

Thing is, plug ins were never fuel tax free here. They were to pay a rate on kWh equivalent to the gallon rate on gasoline. Sounded like the system to do was clunky, but the main problem was that it depended on the honor system. Would be surprised to hear a plurality even knew they were suppose to be paying.

The real shame is the DOT suggested going to a per mile system, but the politicians nixed that.

our optional per mile system uses a third party and you need to send an odometer screenshot once a year to true up their monthly snooping err billing. The state DMV already has annual odometer readings from the mandatory vehicle inspection.

If it's any consolation, California (where the lion's share of drivers are filling up) has nearly 70¢/ gallon on top of the federal tax.

Sister moved herself to PA along with our mom. They have free natural gas in giving up their underground rights to drillers. Ironically the state has some of the highest Natural Gas prices. Sister & mom getting it for free, because iow, everyone else is paying for their privileges.
