Searched the forum but didn't find anything. Looking to get a 2024/2025 Prius XLE and wondered if the standard wheel (19") will fit in the well in the trunk for the spare?

Some folks on Reddit say yes. You’ll need to perform surgery on the styrofoam filler block on the well from the factory. I bought a spare from modernspare.com but for now it’s just sitting in the trunk. All Prius tires for a given year are the same OD. 17”,18”,19” all the same OD. Otherwise how would the speedometer/odometer work correctly?

Yes, with caveats. The full size wheel/tire is roughly the same diameter as the spare wheel/tire that's designed to go there, so it will fit in that way. It's also likely that the full sized wheel/tire will sit properly on the foam support pad that's meant to hold the spare(must be purchased separately). I doubt the standard tie down bolt for the spare would be the proper length for a full size spare, so you'd probably have to figure something out there from the hardware store.

The biggest problem is that the top of the full size spare will sit about two inches(or slightly more) above the surrounding floor. And above the rear seats when they're folded down. If you were absolutely set on a full size spare, you could either buy all the stuff for a compact spare and then pad out the top of the foam boxes to bring them to the level of the tire, or cut the boxes that are already in there to fit the tire and pad them up the same way. Depends on how much you want to spend and how nice you want it all to look.

I've got a thread in one of the subforums about converting to an OEM compact spare setup. It's got a bunch of pics from my conversion and several others that have done it slightly differently. You can get ideas from there.

Yes, that's a concern. The donut spares aren't that tall but are pretty worthless on all other counts. Also, I've noticed that the donut spares sold for the Prius have a smaller rolling circumference than the standard 195/50R19 tire. I guess that would be OK for the rear wheels but I wouldn't want that much difference stressing the front differential.

Couldn't find your thread on the compact spare. Do you have the link?

Go into the Care, Maintenance & Troubleshooting subforum and look for OEM Spare Tire Install. It's still toward the top of the page.

The compact spare(145/90-16) is only a tiny bit smaller than the 19" tire.
    26.7" vs. 26.3" or 1.5% different.

Now if you think you might be in a situation where you might have to drive 50+ miles on a spare, then I can see why a full size would appeal. But if you only expect to need it for <25 miles to get home or for just a couple days driving around in town while waiting for a new tire, then I don't see the issue with the compact. But I don't know your situation, so maybe a full size is better for you.

Found it, thanks (not sure why it didn't come up when I first searched - maybe I was looking in the "General" forum).

As we recently got a 2024 XLE, we had the same concerns. However, we did find that for the temp spare options, that the Falken FK-090 in T145/90-16 has exactly the same diameter as the factory 19" setup - 26.7". After receiving and mounting it, it's identical to the factory Toyo.

When we get a break in the weather, I've got some plans for a hopefully clean method for placement and install under the cover that I'll post up.

Hopefully will clear the calipers, it'll be pretty close.

Hi Mendel- I can't speak for the rims that are sold with the spare tires on eBay or via some of the others (valuespare and modernspare), but the genuine Toyota 16" spare rim fits and clears the calipers with nearly 3/4".

Toyota part: Disc Wheel Part Number: 42611-21280 for just over $72 and got the tire for $104 including delivery and tax, so not too bad.

That said, I hope never to need the spare, but feel much better having it as an option over the mini-compressor and slime solution.

Today I've got the under-padding in place, this week I hope to complete the liner and package tray supports. Already picked up a nice Toyota jack from our local auto recycling place for $15 and tried it out front and back. I just wish Toyota hadn't left this out across many of their models. I was surprised that the Crown Signia doesn't have one either.
