Misfiring or something else?

    The oil is actually wet... would piston ring or valve stem seal replacement qualify as an "engine overhaul?"

    Valve stem seals could be replaced without “engine overhaul” but normally they are done with it.

    Maybe wet fouled spark plug cap could be caused by some problem in the ignition system. Like bad spark plug, bad ignition coil, or wiring to it (or ecu).

    I saw Mode 6 mentioned earlier in this post. There are actually 9 OBD II Modes and here is a list.

    OBD II modes are:

    *Mode 1: Real-time data, MIL, IM monitors.


    *Mode 2: Freeze frame.


    *Mode 3: Stored DTCs.


    *Mode 4: Clear/Reset DTCs and emissions-related diagnostic information.


    *Mode 5: O2 monitoring tests, supported.


    *Mode 6: Test results for continuously and noncontinuously monitored systems, supported.


    *Mode 7: Pending DTCs.


    *Mode 8: Request control of on-board-system, test or component (bidirectional controls).


    *Mode 9: Request VIN and other data.


    These are the nine areas some scan tool can read. A simple code reader will not read these.

    So for the recent few months car has been driving more or less fine, with no obvious misfires or any check engine lights at all - though I continue to hear the chirping like noise - it popped into my head that it might be the belt causing the noise so I wanted to rule that out & I got searching here on the forums.

    I have long been suspecting that this noise is only when the car is put into drive = when the engine connects to the transaxle.

    I decided to put it into a base idle and made a recording - basically the engine seems to be idling fine (for an engine this old) and noise pops up as soon as I put it into drive. Can someone explain any possibilities of this NOT being a transaxle issue? can it be that the engine only acts up under load = as soon as it connects to transaxle?

    So I took the car to a mechanic that actually seemed to know what he's doing and he said it seems the water pump is failing - not leaking as far as he can tell, but water pump should be replaced. He said that the vibration & rumbling of engine may be something else, may be something with the motor winding that if it failed partially, it goes under load 2/3 of way, then slides of last third and repeat. Or its something else, he's not sure as he is not that familiar with hybrids.

    Indeed I do hear a similar component of sound on my car as in this video:
    but mine maybe has more of a squeak to it. I read somewhere that if bearing is bad it can cause some vibration that is detected by knock sensor and can cause rough idle... anyone have an experience like that? Recommendation is to try to take off belt and see if it vibration & rough idle goes away with belt off...

    I was thinking the same thing, remove the belt and rotate it by had and see if it has any play in it. Run the car without the belt and check for the vibration. Don't run the car too long so you don't overheat it. What do you have to loose?

    2008 prius with over 200,000 miles. It began misfiring cyls. 2,4 few days ago. The engine made studder and "hammering " noise. After reading some similar posts I ordered 4 red TRQ ignition coils. Engine runs like new with no

    Did you check the spark plug condition and gap? If they need replacement I only use Denso or NGK from a reputable source such as a dealer, local (big name) parts store, or maybe online from rockauto. Not amazon or ebay.

    Aftermarket coils might be fine, or they might cause problems in a few months. Again my choice is Denso - Toyota.

    Yes installed new Denso 3334 sparkplug. Cyls 1,2,4 were misfiring. ANYONE WITH STUDDERING & LOUD SOUNDS COMING FROM BACK OF ENGINE/TRANS AREA in P,D,R (stops in N) Found my problem to be misfiring cyls. REPLACED IGNITION COILS problem solved. Replaced with TRQ COILS (red....heavier than most other brands 2.91 lbs) RUNS GREAT & STRONG now.

    PRIUS GEN2: ANYONE GETTING MISFIRE CODES P0301-P0304 & P0204,P2100 WHICH I RECEIVED.....check into replacing sparkplugs & cylinder coils. It resolved my codes and runs like new. 2008 prius gen2 250,000 miles.

    I'm glad for you that the work you did solved your problem. However, there are many more things it could be so just changing plugs and coils is not solely the answer for P03xx codes.
    These two codes are not valid on a Gen2. What code reader did you use?
