How long does my hybrid system have left?

I would guess that the hybrid battery is nearing the end of its useful life. You could get a rough idea on the health of the battery by using the Dr Prius app to run the "Life Expectancy Test". The test is better described as a Battery Capacity Test. Search for the apps website.

When you own a vehicle like this you should be having a spare or be ready at the drop of a hat and know what you'll be getting as a spare when this break so you can hem and haw over the nonsense or wifey has another car and she can get you to work or however you play the game I always have extra vehicles always even if they're never driven they're just sitting around they get started and moved around and taken to the store every so often so it's not like they're not used they're just not primaries or not until they become one I'm never out of a vehicle I don't want to have to run out and buy something because something broke I'd rather have an extra one here that I know and trust not one that I have to go out and find that's another project.

Almost all of them last beyond 10 years

The oldest 3rd gen cars are turning 15 now. Lots of Toyotas were designed to last "about 15 years."

Looking back to the 1st and 2nd generation cars, very few made it to 20 years, even with hybrid renewal.

The third generation cars have problems (head gasket, brake booster) that earlier models didn't seem to have, so honestly I'd plan on squeezing it for another "two-ish years." Now is the time to be forming an exit plan- saving up for a replacement and minimizing any but essential spending on the current car.

 

I have a 2011 and I'm just waiting for the hybrid to fail, been waiting years and it's still chugging along. Rest of the car runs perfect, I'll put the couple grand into a new battery. We do have our eyes on a new Rav4, but we're not in any rush. I could see this car lasting another 10 years.

 

What's the miles on it?

If you are a DIYer you may be able to keep it running through difficulties that would cause a non-DIYer to give up.

If my 2010 head gasket finally gives up the goat, I'm planning on replacing it myself and continuing to rack up miles. Same with the hybrid battery. Dr. Prius has me at about 50%, which isn't great around town in the summer but is fine otherwise.

 

Something else to consider, when the head's off: if you've got heavy oil consumption, good time to either replace pistons/rings, or do a (new) short block swap. According to The Car Care Nut, they will all have the revised pistons/rings.

 

Lithium battery?

 

Well sodium-ion, but yeah maybe. I need to look into it more, been busy on other projects.
