Hey guys, my son has a 2024 Prius LE without an auto dimming mirror. I recently bought him a Viofo A229 dash cam and am looking for a DIY on how to hardwire this thing. The car does now have an auto dimming mirror, so unfortunately we can’t piggy back off the mirror power.

Anyone aware of a DIY article for tapping into the fuse box of these cars? I know the basics off this and could certainly spend a few hours experimenting and figuring it out, but would like to save time and follow someone else’s lead.

    You guys know of anything?

includes this info about two unused power connectors in the front console under the shifter knob area. Info about how to access this area is also provided. The instructions are for installing a smart amber lighting kit, but do disclose these two power sources. This might help you, or not.
To view the the full doc, you might want to get the document from the provider as directed in the thread noted above. Its a terra bite zipped file, needs a good unzip program to view it.

You can buy a FiTDVR especially for the Prius.

You don't need a dimming rear view mirror, it attaches to the harness for the camera and power feeds under the mirror housing.
The kit is fantastic. I've included a picture of it here and it powers my camera (5v) and my auto dimming mirror (12v)
The housing pushes down towards the dash and there's a small plastic bit that simple slots in to cover the mirror arm. Once the harness is plugged in, just push the excess cable within the housing and use a small cable tie if necessary. Have patience with the replacement of the housing. It needs to be flat against the screen and slid upwards to engage the red clips.
Just takes a couple of goes.

Hey there, there are couple fuses underneath near your pedals, you can tap into one of those and just tuck the wire alongside your dash and up to the mirror area. Cheers!

So all models (LE included) have that available connection?

Yes. It's the power harness for the camera and sensors. Worth every penny

Your link was for Gen 4. The adapter works with Den 5 too?

Why not? it's not like the mirror or dashcam use that much power.

I spliced mine into the power feed for the TSS camera on the glass. That way it's just one neat little pigtail hanging out. Thread here.

Wht?? the 2024 Prius already has dashcam wiring tucked behind the rearview mirror cover. That is for their optional accessory.

Awesome! I hadn't heard they'd started doing that. That's probably the best factory setup yet.

Great idea, but it does limit you to their camera. I'd like to chose my own.

Is it an odd voltage level or something? Why wouldn't that power source be appropriate for any camera you'd want to hang there?

So what you're saying is that there is this wire on all the 5th gens regardless of trim?

This is false. This connector does not exist on the LE (US market) trim. In fact if I remember correctly, to add the official Toyota dash cam another harness has to be installed to get this connector for it.

(in the second photo which is mine, that extra wire coming from the head liner is MY USB wire to feed dash cam power, run up through the headliner and a pillar, there is no 10 pin connector)

I've got a 2024 UK car and it's the correct kit.
    It's on the picture attached.

IMO the best factory setup, especially with panoramic view, would be to use the existing front & rear cameras as dashcams too. Adding a cheap standalone dashcam is really poor.
My 2025 Camry already has a camera up front below the logo as well as the backup camera. If i want a 2 camera dashcam setup, why do I need to install any other cameras?

Yours has the powered rear view mirror, hence you have that harness. Base trim in the US does not have that. And if the Toyota UK site is to be believed, the base trim in the UK doesn't have the powered mirror (and likely doesn't have that harness) either: "Manual day/night rear-view mirror"

Mine doesn't have a powered rear view mirror.....

It does have adaptive cruise control as standard which is where the FitDvr gets it's power.

I fitted the self dimming mirror myself and used the FitDvr to power both mirror and dashcam.

Wolfbox Mirror Mount 2 Channel dash cam.

In order to get parking protection mode, the camera needs to be hardwired. I do have the Wolfbox hardwire kit, which is to tap into fuse for always on, tap into fuse for when ignition is turn on and ground.

    1) Love and would prefer the adapter kits that power from the mirror space. Do not think there is an auto dimming wire yet there are cams and such up by the mirror and think power is there and probably a harness.

My understanding is if powering through a mirror kit, the cam will only be lowered in when ignition is on, meaning parking protection would never be powered. Is this understanding correct? Would these kits support always on and ignition modes simultaneously?

Otherwise it looks like I run the wire down to the dash space. Tapping the fuse box seems to block the fuse box lid from sitting properly, and has a loose wire running through the top (doesn’t look OEM.)

So, that leads me to likely tapping wires instead of fuses. Anyone know what wires could be tapped for always on, and on when ignition is on?
