So y'all run the 20s over there I thought the 16s or the standard for this setup I'm 20 seem a little cold
The plugs look like they “made it”. California spec for change is 150k miles I think, or 15 years; you’re not too much past that. commendable oil consumption, what’s your oil change interval?
Hi Mendel you & few others here my star first all , Gave me confidence to do my own stuff mechanical , I don’t know much about plugs , but my car feels & drives day & night different smoother & more power , one of them must have let go ! oil changes now on 7 k miles I do uber ride share thanks again
I'm too much of a nervous Nelly to leave plugs in for that long. I tend to pull and inspect them every 50K miles, though the iridium electrodes are very impressive. I put anti-seize on those plug threads, sorry old school habit. Seen too many seized plugs in my day....
Do you reduce torque some, or just rely on angle turned anyways? If the former, 75% should be in the ballpark. FWIW, 3rd gen torque value is 15 ft/lb, no mention of lube, so presumably clean/dry threads. snapshot from POCKET REF by Thomas J. Glover (3rd edition, 19th printing), attached:
I remove, inspect, anti-seize, hand screw them back down, then torque to factory specs. I run iridium plugs to 100K, then they become spares in my trunk, in case one fails or I drop one. I haven't gaped plugs since platinum came out. I know spark plugs don't seize in aluminum heads, but they use to in those old iron heads. Again, old habits die hard.....
Yeah exact opposite here every Prius I buy the plugs almost fall out of the head just by sticking my extension and socket down in the hole quite unnerving driving Toyota's for 45 years I've never seen this until the two ZZ FXE Atkinson engine Even when I pull them out of Corollas Man they are in there. So when I take them out of a Prius I just sock them back down in there like I'm putting them in a Corolla or a Scion XA or something every Prius I've purchased which doesn't make it a Toyota problem these are all generation twos I could almost take the plugs out with my fingers on the knurled part of the extension after I change him you can't and I have torque wrenches but I haven't really had them out of the boxes in years I have the crock sticks for the wheel stud or nut tightening haven't used those in years but these are all on my personal cars so I don't have to worry about liability of wheels falling off and all that stuff for other people anyway and I've been in the car when a wheel went right while the car was trying to go left and rolling down the road the wheel that is quite funny like a Laurel and Hardy kit
The one way too easy to take off scenario I’ve had was a particular Honda oil pan drain bolt. I KNOW I torqued them to spec, yet they were mearly finger-tight at next oil change. I suspected the plastic-coated washer, and when I switched to plain aluminum (dealership had both styles) no more problems.
I was having misfire on these plugs , I didn’t know & no codes , just a screeching sound sometimes going uphill ( that’s now gone), I thought was. Egr , & power was down atleast 20 % & engine more noisier , I didn’t know this engine was more smoother , Surprised me Only problem now is my mpg has gone down it was always around 58-60 mpg ,it went 45 mpg computer figure ,
You must not have changed many plugs. I’ve delt with close to a dozen over 30 years…. STEEL plug, ALUMINUM head….
No codes , Not if if it was misfire before , but it was down on power , & noise sometimes going uphill , Il check codes again
Plugs are to be changed at 120,000 miles. You deferred to save money? Auto rock sells authentic plugs for $40, I take that price over engine knocks everyday.
Not sure what the noise is was ? On light throttle going uphill like a screeching metal 4-5 sec sound Idle was fine always , just the way it pulls is stronger quieter now All good now hopefully , driven about 100 miles Now using eco mode as, that’s what power was on normal before ! £ 55 uk £ With trade discount , Also hoping will improve my oil burning , ( optimistic)
