IIRC Japan does not use road salt? And they’re a compact country, hence low-miles, and near rust- free.

I’m a regular South Main Auto viewer (upstate New York garage): seems like at least half of his patient’s issues are wiring-corrosion related, maddeningly complex systems.

I’ve been reading about car unaffordabilty since the 70’s.
We live in the burbs. Can’t get to the grocery store, library, hardware store, doctor, town hall, etc without a car.
To go into Boston, there’s the mta, but it’s dangerous and overcrowded

Japan would have to import road salt, so they don't use it. That's why early models by Japanese companies sold here had rust problems.

i think down here in south central Virginia they use a mix of sand & salt, much weaker than when i lived in Toronto Canada.

In Colorado we throw "salt sand" onto the county and city roads. It's about 10 parts sand, 1 part salt. The state highways sometimes use calcium chloride when it's warm enough to do so.

In the early 80s when I first moved down here I was confused they basically used sand instead of road salt.

Here they used to use coal ash. The black color would be hit by the sun (this part of Colorado is one of the sunniest parts of the USA) and heat up and melt the snow and ice right off the road.
