2007 Gen 2, 175K miles, original battery, no prior issues with battery. First subzero temps of the year, but issue persisted even with parking car in above freezing garage overnight. New 12v battery after P3000 code began to rule out that potential issue. Code goes off when car starts or shortly after beginning drive. Zero performance issues, no loss of power or fuel economy. Battery meter drops to one bar when code goes off then seemingly recharges in about 1-2 minutes, even while sitting idle, so that seems suspect. Code reader is basic and not giving me more details than P3000. Not hesitant to replace battery, but need to make sure that will solve the issue. Taking to a shop or dealer is a 2 week wait just for an overpriced diagnostic.
    1. Anyone had same, similar issues? Any advice?
    2. Any recommendations on a more advanced reader for battery issue diagnostics?
    Thanks in advance!

When your battery starts bouncing around we are talking about the high voltage battery here the DC traction battery when you can go from blue to green then to magenta or red and back to blue in 2 minutes 3 minutes while driving the car this colors are changing on that display like I'm talking your battery is starting to take a dump You should also have the HV battery fan in the back of the car in the right rear quarter panel running pretty much on full tilt?

That's the first problem, and cheaper to fix than a lot of things you could swap hoping they'd turn out to be the problem.

This suggest that you've got a power fluctuation issue and/or a few bad modules in you traction pack. I'd start by checking all my connections for corrosion/bad contacts first. That's the cheapest and easiest path, before pulling the pack. Maybe this article below may help....

There are several INF sub codes for P3000 (that's set by the hybrid control ecu). Most of them involve the battery ecu having codes.

So you need a more capable scantool to check all systems for codes (including INF codes).

Here's a thread that reviews several apps & devices for smartphones. A summary is at post 37.
