    Hey all,

2017 Prius 2 So I'm having to add a little coolant like every other day, probably put in almost 2 gallons over 6 months and it seems to be going quicker now. I don't see any drip on the ground and am not finding any leakage at hose connections I can easily reach. Not seeing any residue, but I assume it's hitting the engine and boiling off.

I know the heat exchanger has been a problem on these, that has been disconnected and the lines that went to it removed, I can reach in and feel where it was bypassed, no leak.

Is there anything else I can do before I have to take it to a pro?

    Thanks

any white smoke from the exhaust? you might want to do a head gasket test

Coolant leak is a serious problem. It is necessary to urgently find the place where it is leaking.
It is worse if it is the engine.
The piston jamming from hydraulic shock, due to coolant leaking into one of the cylinders will provide a problem with engine replacement.

That coolant is going somewhere. Which coolant tank are you refilling?

A few Priuschatters have had problems with the exhaust heat recovery system leaking coolant directly into the exhaust.

he claims that it has already been bypassed, his second paragraph.

Maybe effectively stopped the leakage? He's a little vague:

Thanks for reaching out y'all, I meant to respond sooner but... life...

Anyway, the problem might have revealed itself... Started the car tonight and it ran crazy rough, popped the hood didn't see anything obvious, drove half a mile and the mil came on. Plugged in my handy dandy Autel MaxiAP200 - P0301 cylinder 1 misfire.

Maybe my coolant is going into #1 but there's no white smoke and the engine oil looks good so maybe not. Gonna tear into it tomorrow, I'll keep you posted.

Pull all the spark plugs and compare the top of the pistons. They should all be universally black across the top. If coolant is leaking into one or two of them, the pistons tops will look like they been steam cleaned.

FWIW: white smoke out the exhaust pipe is a very large leak into exhaust pipe, milk shake engine oil is a coolant leak into the engine oil jacket. If there is a head gasket issue that's causing a misfire - coolant is going into the combustion chamber. Run it like that too long, you risk bending a rod or punching a hole in the side of your motor.

Cars can go ten years without using any coolant. Any loss is an emergency.

Probably had the exhaust heat exchanger leak, eventually bypassed, but coolant loss occurred over a long period.

The engine overheated many times causing a blown head gasket. Good chance there is a warped head or block as well. A rebuilt or JDM engine should be the plan.

    Did you mean OEM engine?
I am not sure he could import a JDM engine from Japan to the US, ;) Typoes can be fun.

I thought JDM meant Japan Domestic Manufacturing, destined for the Japan market, not the US. I have seen posts of people with JDM Prius wanting help with the Japanese only interface, for instance.

Search JDM engines. They are used in Japan engines already imported to the US and sold at distributors in major US cities. Often in the $1200-$1500 range.

Piston 1, passenger side, looks like it might be "steam cleaned". The other pistons are more tan color. It's so hard to tell tho. I'm going to get some kind of light I can stick down in there to be sure.

I think the coolant is leaking into one or more of the cylinders, where else could it be going.
