Prius gen 2 or corolla hybrid 2.0 ?

1.8 hybrid Prius or Corolla is not a keeper . Poor engine ..no happy life with 2zz engine . Wife is typical sorry. She not paying . She just showing you will do whatever . Can she work on it???

I suspect the Gen 2 Prius is getting old enough to need expensive work soon. The Prius is a hatchback and the Corolla is a sedan. I have not been following Corolla Hybrids to know what Hybrid generations were used, but I think they started with the Gen 4, likely 1.8L engine.Here in the US, the safety features we wanted were not offered on the Corolla so we did not look too closely at that car for our needs.

In my case here in the US, my 2017 Prius was totalled in an accident. My wife did not want another hatchback and ride comfort was a major concern due to ongoing medical issues, I ended up buying a 2025 Camry XLE, which is a larger sedan than the Corolla. In the US at least, all 2025 Camry are Gen 5 hybrid with the 2.5L engine. It is much heavier, so much less fuel efficient than the Prius. My Camry was made in the US but if the Camry is offered in Belgium, it would be made in Japan even though it is not sold in Japan.

EDIT: I just looked and the Corolla is offered as a hatchback in your country. It appears the Camry is not available but, if you want an SUV, my son is really enjoying hos RAV4 PHEV as a replacement for his aged Prius V.

 

The 2.5 hybrid engines much better than 2zz 1.8 for sure . And obviously not as fuel efficient. But what I have a hard time believing is I was looking at a I don't know 2015 Honda CR something looks like a CRX but it's a hybrid and the guy said it only gets 37 miles to the gallon I said what's the point that doesn't sound right but he said that's normal and the car was clean as a pin like a $9,000 car. I couldn't believe it.

 

Way back before I bought my 2017 Prius, I was curious about Honda hybrids so I looked at user forums. Pretty much everyone there had faces major, expensive repair issues, some multiple times. I saw nobody recommending buying one. That was a stark contrast compared to PriusChat. At least at that time, Honda was a serial hybrid, directly inline with the engine.

 

Cars are not designed to last indefinitely. Your car is already 20 years old with 330,000 km, which is a good life span for any vehicle. Most cars don't make it that long. And at some point, things will break and will need to be repaired. It might be next year, it might be 5 years from now.

Newer cars are also expensive. So I'll give you the same advice that was given to me: start saving for your next car now, so you can afford it when you need it. It's a bad idea to go into debt to buy a car, so you can hold off on making the purchase until you have the money. But then once you do have the cash, you can buy the car your wife is looking at.

 

IMHO, at least the Corollas here in the states, almost everything will be the same. The suspension and steering will be tighter and you'll get better crash protection. That's about it. It's still be a noisy bumpy ride at about the same mileage.
I agree with @Moving Right Along, I wouldn't want to go into major debt to finance it, and Belgium has a very good public transportation system - at least better than here in the states.

I have three or four generation 2 Prius depending upon how you look at it and they're all heading to 600,000 right now and they'll make it if I do I guess for relatively almost nothing comparatively speaking The generation 3 and the business you're speaking of buying and then possibly not even driving it near as much as it needs to be so it'll be sitting in the car park and any of that The numbers are very much against you it's just the way it works out. The generation 2 will outlast two of the cars your wife wants. It's just the way it is generally The car you have that the wife wants you to get rid of for whatever reason is built very well The car she wants well not so much anyway I wish you well and happy travels.

 

If they bought new it would be either Gen 4 or Gen 5, not Gen 3. I do not think Toyota made a Gen 3 Corolla Hybrid.

 

Nobody does.

But owning a car may suddenly become a necessity, and that kind of thing happens more often when your current car is 20 years old.

Your wife probably just wants to put your kid in a safe modern car. Can't really blame her, even the backseat monitoring feature they've added is fantastic.

You have to realize that it is up to you to decide when something that wasn't necessary becomes necessary. That means you have to accept that it will happen whether you want it to or not. Even if it isn't today or this month, it really helps to put a date on the calendar and plan to do it your way instead of just letting it happen when your existing car blows out somewhere.
