Some of us want the reliability, increased safety features and improvements a new car provides. Having an old car for around town and a better one for trips and the wife has real benefit.

Sometimes the “improvements” can be legislated stuff that is mostly frustrating. Or cost-cutting measures tarted up with lipstick. Not always, but it’s worth being cagey.

Thanks again everyone for all the good suggestions and conversation. Yes, it is the engine water pump that needs to be replaced. I'd say we're 60/40 right now in favor of fixing the car. I'm also not worried about paying full price for a new hybrid Toyota battery for the reliability and warranty. I mentioned in my post, I am planning to transfer it into my '09 prius once we decide to say goodbye to the '07. I know other things may happen and that won't be a possibility, but I'll take that gamble. I think the biggest thing is our values. Like most on this board it appears, we don't want to give in to "the system" and take pride in fixing our older cars. I say that while being fully aware that sometimes it is the better decision financially and safety/reliability wise to move on. I almost wish that the car needed 10k in immediate repairs because then the decision would be made for us! But at this price point, for right now anyways we can get back up and running for about 10% of the cost of the new Honda CRV Hybrid. We've already talked about it and if we buy now, that is the car. We have test driven everything and lit our eyeballs on fire researching. If we kicked the can down the road and got another year or two or three out of the '07, maybe we would go for a Rav4 Hybrid given the redesign that is coming out.

Oh, and yes, fully understand the stealership salivating when cars like ours come in for work. I brought my '09 Prius into the one down in Tucson in 2017, so about 8 years ago. If I remember correctly they said I needed like 11,000 in work done to my car. Other than oil changes and tires, I haven't done anything in those 7 years with zero issues. Unbelievable how predatory they are.

The minimum requirements for me in a new car would be: blind spot detection, backup camera with parking sensors,
active cruise control, heated steering wheel and push button start.

Exactly. Some people disregard safety thinking they are frugal.

    Hi All,
Thanks again for all your opinions on the situation. We decided to fix the 2007 prius. We just got it back and are really glad we did the work. Although we can afford a new car, just on principle/values, we feel good and take pride of our old car and its great condition. It still looks like almost new 18 years later! We got 64 mpg on the new hybrid battery on its first 60 mile trip from Flagstaff to Sedona. Of course its mostly downhill, but still :-0)
Long story short, the stealership in Flagstaff quotes us 3500 to get the work done and when we came in they charged us 4500. All of a sudden, the engine water pump went up from 425 to 675, and they charged us for a new drive belt and labor for that since the engine water pump was removed, they said it was easier to do that now. They did tell us the drive belt should be replaced at some point soon, but we did not authorize it. We would have paid to have a regular mechanic do it. Then they added a bunch of other junk fees to bring the total to 1,000 more than we should have paid. We dismantled the service rep and the manager for good reason right then and there pointing out the 10 different reasons that was stealing, bait and switch, unauthorized repair (drive belt) and just downright unethical and predatory. They knew they had picked the wrong people to screw over and immediately lowered the price down to the original quote. It makes me so angry and deflated that this is how people work. Most people don't push back on this stuff and they take advantage of that. The society we've created...
Happy Holidays everyone and thanks again for your help.

Depends were you live and the independent hybrid resources you can access. Arizona is not one of the better places for hybrid work.

Glad you decided to keep the prius and congrats on the "discussion" at the dealership. It isn't just dealerships, many businesses think their service is a blank check to rob the consumer. A recent home renovation project was quoted at 22K, ballparked at 24K and they wanted $400 to come and give an exact number, and 12K. All had the exact same description of work and expected construction details!

Thanks MCCOHENS. I hear you, it just seems like it's part of any business nowadays. It's built into the business model to steal until someone actually speaks up. People are so tired of everything, that many people don't have the energy for another confrontation.

It's always hard deciding to let a vehicle go or to just replace it....and do I replace it with a good used or buy new?

Some big issues these days are the high costs of used vehicles and the high costs of insurance, especially for a new vehicle....OUCH! (After weighing all the issues, it "might be cheaper to keep her")

Ahmed posted a good video on this topic since he is asked these questions a LOT....and he has some good advise....

Thanks Colorado Boo, Funny, I listened to that video on the way back after picking up the car. It reaffirmed our decision to keep it. Totally agree with the video and with you said with all the costs - insurance, new car prices, used car prices, it was better to fix the old car.

With the scarcity of independent hybrid mechanics around here, I think they realize they can charge almost as much as the dealership for repairs.

Unless they do additional work, they're not suppose to be able to inflate prices like that - Another $100 is acceptable, if they run into additional or unforeseen issues, but a quote is a quote. Your local consumer rights advocate and/or bureau of automotive repair would have something to say about that kind of price inflation!!!

Yes finding the right shop is key to keeping an older car on the road. I am on my third in 10 years, poor quality of repairs or stupid pricing has driven me away. I don't argue price but after one or 2 stupid bills they just don't hear from me again. Spent 15 minutes talking to my current guy about a problem, he knows me and gave me some advice on what to look for. He was right, fixed the problem right away. I rewarded him with a gift card from the local sub(hoagie) place.

Some problems can be solved by Chuck in a Truck. Some problems just cost you money when Chuck shotguns parts. You don't want Chuck's Taillight warranty - ends when his truck leaves the site.

Good going; Lots of people burn-up a mechanic's time trying to get them to do a free diagnostic. Then they get pissed when they say they're too busy. Those independent shops needs to pay bills too. That doesn't get done when everyone is asking for free advice. While that didn't pay the bills, it was a nice gesture.

    Kudos.....

Thanks for posting this question. My 31 YO daughter is in the same mode. She rented a small SUV for a 300 mile trip as the prius is a little gutless in the hills. Now she wants and can afford a RAV4 hybrid. I am encouraging the decision as it is time to drive something a little newer as she travels more. We had one 110 mile tow home and I do not want calls like that again. The funniest part is she still wants to keep the prius for local drives "until it dies".

Then you take $5k and throw it away when it dies for the luxury of driving around town. Plus insurance and maintenance.
