Taxes will be based on the price you pay and if it's msrp you pay taxes on that. Insurance could be slightly less but only because the car has depreciated a year already.

I see those but several are more than 1.5 hrs away. I wouldn’t touch Grieco. I get that it looks easy on your end. Several dealerships have already told me they won’t accept a bank check from someone other than the actual buyer who is signing for the car. I don’t have someone to drive me back and forth etc. If one pops up at Nucar or Balise, I could use it as leverage but other than that I’m done. Just want the car to arrive in great condition and to be able to sell my 2009 asap.

Right. I’m talking about town taxes which will shift a bit as the car gets older. Technically more of an advantage to wait on a new car until the auto industry figures itself out but I’ve waited too long already,

A huge bunch of silver Prius PHEV SEs.

They look like UFOs in the 1950s B movies.

Then some states charge an annual property tax on cars based upon the value. Depending on how they figure that value, the older MY car might pay less.

We get charged 6.25% when you buy plus fees along with $75 yearly for tags.

On a $40,000 car, the 6.25% adds $2,500 by itself. If sold used and depreciated, the tax goes down accordingly.

And other states add an amount to the yearly tag that is based upon the current value for the car. How that is figured depends on the state.
It's an annual tax like you pay on a house.

I always picture Americans as being an organized, no-nonsense, common sense bunch. Which flies in the face of this:

That just wouldn't happen in Canada; you buy a car, they phone up an insurance agent, they come to the dealership (or used car lot) with paperwork and a handful of plates.

I understand the above can drag on, for months?

The dealer registers a new car with the state for one of the fees, maybe $500. They give you a rear paper plate the police can id you from. But the dealer typically can take 30 days to get your real metal plates. Some states are rear plates only but most require front and rear.

Existing car insurance will cover the new car for a few weeks if necessary. Any finance company will want full coverage right away but cash buyers can get away with minimum liability coverage if they want to risk their car.

Lots of people (32 million) drive older cars without insurance but it's technically illegal and could get you a ticket. They may buy a month's worth when it's time to buy tags from fly by night insurance companies. As a result most of us buy extra "uninsured motorist insurance".

It's pretty much the wild west in the US complete with lots of guns in cars. Paranoid people everywhere.

I am not sure what your question is, but some states do not use front license plates. For example, when I lived in Georgia, they only gave me one for the rear, and I chose the “Give the wildlife a chance” plate, which cost a little extra. My special plate had a calming effect on the locals when they saw it. In California, front license plates are mandatory, and a long, long time ago when I bought my used light-blue 1985 Toyota Corolla LE for $1,700, I got ticketed for not knowing that and not installing my front license plate. The previous owner had given me the plate loose. I installed it and took it to inspection and paid the fine.

Front plates aren't required in several states. With the front bumper bump on the gen5, a novelty plate might be preferable for people in those states.

Well, I thought Toyota was going to announce the 2025 Prius today, but it looks like it will be next week or the week after. They like to do product press releases on Tuesdays, and there were four products left: Prius HEV, Tacoma, bZ4X, and Mirai. They chose Tacoma and bZ4x this week. Not sure how the next two weeks are going to go with next Tuesday being Christmas Eve and the Tuesday after that being New Year's Eve.

Side note: Big MSRP reduction on the bZ4X. 2025 XLE is $6,000 cheaper than the 2024 XLE, and the 2025 Limited is $5,380 cheaper. Guess the terrible sales figures and bad reviews* made an impact.

*generally they went: "nice vehicle, but too expensive for the EV range"
