I served in the Coast Guard, but expect no thanks or honors. It was an honorable job that I did mostly with pride and while we had a few harrowing times, nothing like vets serving on combat.

But, I sadly admit DEC 7 escaped my notice this year. I was only reminded when I followed a link posted by Kris dealing with the recent California earthquake.

That online news site had a Pearl Harbor story written by a vet, worth a look. I found descriptions of the Pearl Harbor "accommodations" most interesting as the author pulls Shore Patrol duties.
Also notes the only Rose Bowl not played in California. For the geographically challenged, Humboldt County is in extreme Northern California, traditionally reliant on logging redwood trees and commercial fishing, neither doing so well at the moment. Area also gained notice as a notorious marijuana growing area, but that industry is also in decline.

US leaders were looking for a way to enter into World War II and needed a way to justify it... So when surveillance indicated the attack on Pearl Harbor would occur the next day, the US stood down there defense and made sure all three of the Pacific Fleet's impossible to quickly replace aircraft carriers were kept far away from Pearl Harbor during the attack.

Had Japan not been tempted by all the incentives the US offered to make the attack, they may still well be controlling Korea and Philippines as part of Japan to this day.

Most troubling of all is Trump is a lot like Emperor Hirohito and may well be baited by our enemies to launch an attack that will lead to not just the end of global dominance by the US, but an end to the United States itself. It was a true Trumpian lapse in judgement to fall into the US trap in Pear Harbor: What was Japan’s biggest mistake during WW2? - Quora

    1. USS Ward DD-139, drilled the IJN midget sub trough the sail with her first (some say second) shot from her deck guns nearly an hour and a half before the attack. Sadly, he was sunk by gunfire by USS O'Brien (DD-725), commanded by Commander William W. Outerbridge, who had commanded Ward during the attack on Pearl Harbor three years prior.
    The date?
    Dec 7, 1944.

    2. True, see 'the Sullivans,' five brothers lost on a light cruiser during the Guadalcanal campaign and mentioned briefly during 'Saving Private Ryan." It was a painful lesson, well learned.
Two Navy Ships were named for the five brothers including DDG68 - serving presently.

    4. Nope. Not today. The last Arizona survivor died in April.

The Battleship Arizona was fueled to its maximum level on December 6, 1941, with 1.5 million gallons of oil. Even though the ship was broken in two by the explosion, many of its fuel tanks survived the Dec 7th attack. Some 50-60,000 gallons have leaked out over the years. An estimated 500,000 gallons still remain!

    9. Pretty close!
The ashes were (and are) in an urn, in the Chief's locker - in CPO quarters.
