Time compression and longer-scale thinking perhaps?
-something for which humans are suboptimal equipped....presently.

    I'm reminded of Napoleon:

He had a 'thing' for trees.
HE understood the wisdom of planting a tree whose shade one might never enjoy......

    Ponder the question....

Which had more effect on the climate: SpaceX or EVs in total?

Humans are evolved for the gravity on earth, among other things. Humans are not exempt from extinction.

Very true. Even a 6 month stint in the space station, and there's significant ramifications.

Mess up your nest and move to another? Doesn't seem responsible, nor sustainable. Not to mention practical.

I don't see how ICEVs or EVs are that much of a hassle one over the other. Just as long as I can get to the next fuel station or charging station (whichever applies to the vehicle) I'm perfectly happy. I don't mind wait times. I did road trips in the Leaf. As long as an EV makes it to the next charging station, I don't care if I'm there for a few hours, it just need to make it.

People seem to polarize over the quirks of technology. Android or iOS? Windows, MacOS, Linux or ChromeOS? ARM, x85 or RISC V? Ford or Chevy or Dodge? Utilitarian vehicle or... um... Let's see here, there must be some sort of alternative to utilitarian styled vehicles... Ah! or a non-Cross Corolla!

My question is: Which is better for me, my family and my planet? And if I want it to be fun it better be a stick shift, otherwise it's just a get-me-where-I-need-to-go tool.

I don't see abandoning Earth even remotely possible. It's like abandoning land to search for a way to make dryer shelter and richer pastures and luscious-er orchards at the bottom of the sea.

I don't see it as being avoidable - but then I live close to the Gulf of Mexico, and math is math.
There is a 100% probability that it will happen again.

As far as the bottom of the sea thing?
    We've already BTDT.
    See: SEALAB.

    Fuel is fuel.
It applies to all the vehicles.
Range anxiety is REALLY fuel anxiety, and BEVs merely add an additional layer of complexity because it's a little harder to have AAA deliver up to 2 gallons of amps to you when you've failed to properly plan.

All of this is ops normal stuff.

When natural (or human caused) disasters happen then you have additional factors to consider and in my experience Storage is pretty important.
With current tech, electrical current is a little harder to store at scale than petrol.
Propane can be stored for decades but you give up portability.

If you LIMIT yourself to only one choice between EV, Hybrid and ICE - hybrid is going to win every time, all the time - because it's generally an "all of the above" option.

When you consider FUEL - two sources are ALWAYS better than one!

100% probability of what? Mass extinction? Even then, let me put it this way. Earth is like a fully functioning car. If something happened to it it's like a sparkplug went out and needs replacing. Going to Mars or any other planet would be like being sent to the Sahara desert by yourself and being told to fabricate your own car by means of your own wits. That's way harder than just "changing the sparkplug" on planet Earth. And if we ever get to the point that the Sun goes berserk then we'd need to get out of the solar system, which will likely never be a possibility.

I tried to get myself into a plug-in hybrid but they were too expensive at the time. A PHEV would be ideal if not too expensive. Of course taking away over $100 a month in fuel costs means I can afford a more expensive BEV or PHEV than an ICEV.

Careful with the math; charging isn’t free.

I'm going off of experience. The Nissan Leaf was not more than $50/mo in electricity. I only paid for fast charging once. The Avalon is $150 to $200/mo in gasoline.

    $200/$3gallon=66galx40mpg=2,640 miles per month.
    $200/$4gallon=50galx40mpg=2,000 miles

    24kwh/3.5miles per kw=70 miles range. 2,000miles/70=28 full charges. 24kw/charge @ .15 cents (colorado avg) x 28=$100/mth

Were you driving this much in a 24kwh/70 mile range Leaf?

I've always felt it was better to be closer to the source, that great fusion reactor in the sky, than anything else:
    • Solar cells
    • Wind generater
    • Fermentable crops for alcohols
    Regardless, I've made my choices:
    • BEV - for long ranges
    • PHEV - for urban errands with ICE-to-generator backup

You said that we can't leave.
I'm saying that there's a 100-percent chance that we will have to - eventually.
Remember that both might be correct , but the arc of human history points the other way.

I'm old enough to have seen humans - even Musk do things that nay-sayers said were 'impossible.'
    So.
    I get it.
Musk is on the outs with some folks, but I've read a couple of his bios, and he seems to be thinking about humans infesting other rocks in a little longer terms than your Spark plug premise.

The thread title asks us to list five reasons FOR and AGAINST BEVs, PHEVs/Hybrids, and ICE.
That's 30 different things, but since PHEVs have all of the same pros and cons as both BEVs and 'gassers' it's a little tough for a 'winner' or a 'loser' declaration, especially when you consider new AND used vehicles.

For ops normal, gasser advantages would seem to be things like range, Price, access to stored and storable fuel, size, etc.....
PHEVs share many of those same advantages except for price.
BEVs have some advantages including safety (except for a skin-skin crash in some cases) and.....um......well.....they have some.

    Concur!!

    As have I.
I actually considered a BEV for my last vehicle.
    It didn't make the cut.

For those that say BEV/PHEVs are cheaper to operate I say that's mostly balloon juice in most cases.
My 06 Envoy has been paid for for over 14 years, the taxes and registration were probably less than $30 and the liability-only insurance is correspondingly cheap.
It can haul 5 adult-sized humans plus cargo while towing a 6000# trailer.

    Yep.
It only gets 19 miles per gallon - but gas is $2.199 as of this AM and falling FAST.

There IS NO ROI for cars because cars are NOT an investment.
    They're an expense!

A Prius bought in 06 cost nearly exactly what my Envoy went for, AND it might have been less expensive to own and operate over the last 18 years or might not depending on how many times I would have had to rent a truck, the ups and downs of gas prices over the last 18 years and the insurance, maintenance, and repair deltas....
The Prius would probably have been cheaper - but HERE is the THING!
There will not be THAT MUCH of a delta!
    You know why?
Because of the truism that people who buy cars every 4-5 years generally spend more money FOR CARS than people who buy cars less often and keep them longer.
Over the course of time, more and more used cars will be BEV/PHEVs - so the algebra will be different, but until THEN you need more - um - 'investors' to recoup those non-recuring engineering expenses.

    Either way?
In the investment world they would say that buying more cars, more often is......."more expensive." ;)
Only the government spends more money to save more money........mostly because it's other people's money.
