    But not an easy one to pull off in this society. I would still be able to get to work and the grocery store, but I would be shunned by my peers and family. And probably ran over from all the crazy SUV and pickup drivers.

    weaning yourself from cars is maybe like getting from a canoe to a dock? You gradually shift your weight over, ‘till you’ve got almost all your weight on the dock, then lift away from the canoe, and it barely moves.

    similarly with the car: keep it, maintain it well, while gradually reducing your use of it, and your dependence on it.
