I saw this image of a Gen2 Prius pulling a Camper (reddit most likely). I can't find the thread anymore. I found by accident the pic in this thread. Who is this person?

The thread on reddit, someone was saying the dude had installed a Tekonsha Primus Brake Controller. I wanna know how the wiring is done in a Prius. Anybody?

    Edit: found this old thread

I've seen that picture before I wonder if that stage or not It doesn't seem like that camper would put the nice person end of that white car where it's sitting even near empty but hey who am I they could have lifting springs help or springs different coilovers on the back all kinds of nonsense I can't imagine that handles any kind of way but looks like it's a living setup so probably just moves to get out of the way of the nosy people every few days just because that's the way most locals are now but even with a brake controller You really want to be doing something like that that big I pulled a little trailer sometime but nothing that needs its own brakes and I'm not sure why you would think the wiring would be any different from a regular car the hybrid doesn't change anything The brake controller needs a signal from the brake so we can activate the brakes on said trailer and that's it The hybrid doesn't make that any different your brake pedal and brake switch still have to go on and off to turn the lights on in the back and that's the signal you want there's nothing special about tying into the brake actuator or any kind of silliness like that It's just a simple signal.

No, not going that big at all. Staying within the 1600 lbs - I'd like to have brakes for safety.

Pretty sure that it is staged. Notice that the picture is of a parked vehicle. In the referenced thread they say that is a 3400 lb trailer, and here:

    Weights - USA Cargo Trailer

that gives a tongue weight of over 500 lbs for a trailer of that weight. The Prius manual gives a maximum load weight of 810 pounds. Pretty sure they didn't mean 5/8 of it behind the back wheels.

I think they parked the trailer and then stacked some timber or other solid support under the frame to take the weight, backed in the Prius, lowered the trailer onto the hitch, but with the weight on the timber. Maybe they edited the photo to remove the timber. I tried zooming in and playing with the contrast, but there is just a smooth blur under the trailer in front of its wheels. So no visual evidence of the supports.

Anyway, imagine that it is real, the thing slowly (and I mean SLOWLY) accelerates. My car feels very sluggish with 4 adults on board, and that is under 800 lbs. This is is over 4X that much mass. Still, it could probably get up to 35 or 45 MPH eventually, on a smooth road, in a flat straight line. Stopping, don't want to think about stopping. Or about going around a corner. Or going up or down hills. Or wind, yikes!

Sounds crazy, but then again there's those guys who towed for fun 16k lbs with a Prius; but you're right all that weight on the tongue, doesn't sound like fun (def had some HD springs if it's real). I saw a couple of guys on Reddit Prius claiming they abused several Prius gens with 1500-2000 lbs and no tranny blew up, all was good. So idk. I'll keep it normal my self and it's certainly reassuring to hear from those real world examples.

Thanks for the feedback; I always appreciate hearing from other's experience. That's 1200 lbs total or 1200 lbs of charge. Asking because a 5x8 usually has anywhere from 600 to 900 lbs itself depending on construction.

Out of curiosity, were you ever faced with a slope towing that? I'm curious to understand what that felt like. It would be a real bitch to invest only to find out it's stupid heavy.

First off it's not a camper like the thing you pictured the other day in the parking lot some ridiculous camper 5th wheel looking thing attached to the back of a generation 2 complete nonsense You might pull it around the parking lot but that would be doing more damage to the car then would even be worth fooling with My trailer is made by FLOE It weighs 300 lb sitting next to the car empty by the time I put some plywood in it to bring home from home Depot to do some projects or put my residential Cub cadet zero turn a push mower and a weed eater in it I don't know what it always probably about 1200 lb with the trailer I went to pick up that residential Cub cadet zero turn in Virginia out past the town of Mayberry which is somewhere here in North Carolina towards the mountains I drove with an empty trailer through Mayberry in the Virginia to purchase the zero turn through the mountains and then drove back through the mountains with the zero turn in the back of the trailer attached to a 2013 Persona no issues I wasn't flying down hills and trying to fly back uphill either pretty much driving fairly normal as to not cause any events whipping around the mountains with the zero turn was quite fun I was on back roads and State roads not on the interstate car handled reasonably well and we had the zero turn smacking the sides of the trailer through the chicanes etc. But it's not something I do everyday The trailer is usually here to move the zero turn or construction material from local supply houses to my residence and that sort of thing Not really to travel with and take materials to jobs and other places and all of that not at all I use my V6 Toyota van for that it'll pull that trailer and I don't even know it's behind the vehicle
