Not a TDI, but our 1985 VW Golf was a blast! I loved filling up and then going some 600 miles to the in-laws' and then barely squeezing in 10 gallons there. The car felt immortal too. I gave it to a family member and the car still ran just fine yet had some 700k miles on it.

But I'm weird, I like small underpowered cars with stick shifts.

My VWs felt immoral, POS on wheels. I do have to admit, if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have looked into other forms of mobility.

    My Prius feels that way.

I'm beginning to feel that all forms of transportation that aren't just one's two feet are all immoral to some extent. Another necessity created by the rich to rob the poor at the expense of the environment.

Back on subject, VW quality kind of went south towards the end of the 1980's. If you want quality now you get a Toyota. But expect to pay way more than a new air cooled VW Beetle adjusted for inflation for a used Corolla hybrid with a salvage title.

Looks like even Toyota's having its issues. Scotty Kilmer's a long time Toyota supporter, but this is one of his latest videos.

Perhaps. But Scotty, while making some good videos, bases a lot of his observations on his opinions rather than on facts.

I didn't get through the whole video, but if a person were to buy a new car today and wanted it to be as long lasting as possible, what would it be?

You may have it the other way around.
Dot.gov may be spending TOO much on it.

That's an opinion. Personally I liked small, under-powered, perhaps European styled cars (with stick shift of course). That is the only reason I'd buy a car for fun. The kind of car that would make me smile and I'd drive around just because.

Other than that, IMO all other cars are just a silly tool for getting from point A to point B and I see no difference in the experience if it's a Toyota, Chevy, BMW, Lamborghini or Yugo, or if it runs on electricity, gasoline, diesel, hydrogen, natural gas or liquid air. Just as long as it gets me from point A to point B the most sensibly possible. I couldn't care less if my car's A/C or radio works or not (the wife might say otherwise). But that's just my opinion.
