Looking to replace bad cells in my son's 05 prius. Any advise on replacing cells which seems to be half the cost of replacing the whole battery? What is the differential charge threshold for cell replacement? The pixt is just a snapshot with ignition on as since the car is not running. Its had battery code for a few months and we clear it daily, restart and runs fine and now will not start. I have tried jumping it, have disconnected and reconnected the 12v battery and don't think that is the problem. I have the same code that I clear every 2 days or so on my 2010 for the last year and has been running ok otherwise. The 05 seems to be more temperamental compared to the 2010. I have taken apart and cleaned the 2010 battery before. I will take the 05 pack cover off to make sure there are no visual problems before replacing cells. Looking on internet for cells such as TOYOTA PRIUS HYBRID BATTERY CELL NIMH MODULE 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 | eBay SM-G960U ?
It's hard to find good prismatic modules I don't know why that is maybe they're just not made available from Panasonic EV as singles or something I'm not sure.
What codes are getting on the 2005, and what pic? If it's P0A80 (replace hybrid battery) and or P300xx (battery block "y" becomes weak), then there are MANY threads about this in the forums. Use the search function. Short form is that "just" replacing some modules has a very low chance of working. If block voltage differential is more than 0.3V for more than a few seconds then the battery ecu will (eventually) throw codes. The higher the differential, the shorter time before it codes. Battery modules "degrade" some with time and use. As long as they do so evenly then there's really no problem. Any replacement module will have different effective capacity and State of Charge than the "good" modules in the pack. So you end up with either high static voltage differential, or high diff under charge - discharge loads. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Its only P0A80. Will Dr Prius battery test give me a good estimate of cell quality? I have snapshots of battery monitor while the car is running. I have tried running it several times and it keeps saying that the battery is too cold to complete the test. The last time I put it in maintenance mode and let it run a long time to see if it would heat up and it only went up 2 degrees to 48. I hear what you are saying about ce replacement though. SM-G960U ?
I have the paid version of Dr Prius on my android phone, so I can have the app record battery data while driving the car, with heavy accel and decel. I haven't found the built in "tests" to be that useful. Then I can go back and look at the data (it's a .csv file) to find which block(s) is-are the problem. If any block drops by 1.0-1.5V while discharging, then there's a failed module in that block. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
