One of my son-in-law's first jobs after he stopped being self-employed was working for FedEx that allowed him to bring home the truck so he wouldn't have to have his own car.

If by incentives you mean carpool lane stickers, that's true. As for tax credits for ev's though it's a different story.
As for other incentives, yeah probably there were even incentives for building gas burners. IDK

There are incentives for building batteries, like lithium ion batteries used in cars. I'm not sure if that started before the first Teslas or Chevy Volt, but there are there and will probably continue there even if the EV mandate and incentives are repealed.

    There may be others.

just a wild guess, but i would bet tax payers have been subsidizing automobile manufacturers in one form or another for a long time

The first $7500 tax credit for plug ins was signed in 2008. Public Law 110-343 - Wikipedia
The Leaf and Volt were eligible for it. Same with the Tesla's when they came out. I'm unaware of any reason why the Roadster wouldn't have qualified. Toyota got the original 5kWh minimum reduced so the PiP would get something.

My question is if Musk is truly about getting as many car owners into Teslas and EVs as possible, or if that's not really a short term goal anymore?

Here we have him against the EV tax incentive. He also announced in a press conference that Tesla is no longer working on the Model 2. So the only kind of cheap car he has planned is the two seater robo taxi, which will be $30,000 (plus whatever self-driving costs. :ROFLMAO: Sorry, I just had to add that in there.)

So meanwhile, is everyone in the USA that can't afford a +$40k car supposed to either buy a gas car or move to China?

he probably is, but hasn't been able to drive costs down far enough, as far as i can see. maybe when the current model sales slow down enough he will be forced to do something, but what can he do?

That level of wealth in one person allows him to tinker with doing opposite of what everyone thinks he should do or they would do. It doesn’t matter the outcome at this point, money is not an issue. I don’t think wealth has ever been seen in one person like this before. A few others are in the same group. They have the most shells or beads, now what.

    It seems not to be.
This is part of the reason I am much less excited about promoting Tesla at shows & events, or buying their products.

Musk appears to have decided regulations are a bigger problem than our environment.

I fear that in order to remove a bale of hay from a barn, he decided to burn down the barn.

In some cases I would think that they are.
Musk is still a fairly liberal dude - he just got left behind by American liberalism.

People forget that Musk did not start Tesla, and he does not 'own' Tesla.
He just SAVED Tesla....and it's doing fairly well at the moment - but he's still just a majority stock holder.
I would suspect that Tesla is going to sell every car that they make - and since you cannot hide a sunrise I would further suspect that there will be MORE battery plants in the US next year and not less.

To convert this all to Priuschatese:

If you're a REAL liberal, WHO do you buy your cars from?
    The Federation or the Ferengi?
Which is REALLY going to be better for the planet?
I fix phones for a living, and so I have some passing familiarity with communications.
The US government spends giga-bucks to 'conquer the digital divide' and meanwhile Starlink is democratizing worldwide communications and is on track to provide low cost and high bandwidth comms - without incentives and without picking winners and losers.
Ask the Ukies or a BUNCH of rednecks in NC why this is important.

The REAL question you want to ask yourself in 'Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News' is:
Will sunsetting the EV Tax credit be good for the planet?

    I think: yes.

I'm not sure. But I would guess neither.

Again, unsure leaning towards probably not.
    Sample size = 1.

I've been very tempted to lease an EV as a second car right now. This is due in large part to the incentives making the deal look very hard to resist. The only way I was able to afford my first EV was through a state tax incentive.

Disincentivizing EVs and then making them more expensive on top of that isn't going to help me buy one any time in the near future. Maybe it will help the masses, but I don't see how it could. Maybe it will help in some other form, like promote public transportation. We will have to wait to find out I guess.

musk has his own ideal of the world, and his own vision to fix it. that can be scary, much like a science fiction movie of the future
