Cam and crank signal in techstream.

    What are you trying to accomplish?

    The only crank position "data" on (any) scantool is RPM.

    Some cars have data showing whether or not the camshaft position is where the ECM expects it to be.

    Toyota doesn't have that in normal engine data. It sort of has that in the bidirectional VVT tests.

    I keep getting P0016 "cam and crank timing correlation".

    I took the valve cover off, set Cyl 1 and verified both cam shafts and crank were in alignment.

    All of the timing components are brand new.

    I checked the cam and crank sensors for proper resistance.

    I just had the VVT-I solenoid warrantied under autozone and I'm hoping that possibly the solenoid was bad, because I can't figure out what else would cause this.

    Only other thing I can think of is possibly a bad 12v battery.

    The workup for it in the FSM says either the timing is jumped or the ECM is bad. I've never had an ECM just "go bad".

    The new solenoid didn't fix it.

    Could the ECM possibly be bad?

    Someone (@mr_guy_mann maybe?) has posted a thread here some time ago that showed use of a two-channel oscilloscope to observe the crank/cam correlation, if that's of interest.

    Well the factory service manual only states 2 things for P0016:
    1. Engine out of time (physically)

    2. Replace ECM.
    I found a used ECM for my year for $24 shipped.

    I recall reading a thread where someone (might of been Mr Guy Man as well) that P0016 was incorrectly set when it should of been P0011 or P0012.

    If that's the case, the FSM also says this:
    DTC P0011 or P0012 is output when a foreign object in
    engine oil is caught in some part of the system.

    Love how it says "some part".

    Also:
    These codes will stay registered even if the system returns to normal after a short time.

    I'm still suspecting possibly the timing gear assembly, the big clutch pack looking thing mounted to the intake camshaft.

    in some cases it's a stretched chain (I have that issue in mine) and I bought a cloyes kit. What brand did you use? I think it matters because a slight difference in the chain triggers p0016.

    p0011 and p0012 are cause by VCT solenoids (dirty or bad) usually gets fixed by cleaning or replacing.
