I just went from 19” to 17” on my ‘24 XSE and there was only one size that matched the circumference of the OEM wheel and that was 125/55/17. The weight of the smaller rim/tire is virtually identical to the 19s I removed. The speedometer remained dead on as well as the miles meter due to matching the footprint of the OEM wheel / tire. The ride is now quiet at highway speed, the handling seems better, and I had a nice number of tires to choose from. I have not tested mileage.

If you go to an 18 inch wheel from 19 inches, there is also one identical match to keep your mileage and speedometer synced up accurately - 145/45/18. I am not sure, however, if this will fit - if it does, it may be tight.

Wow. What a difference in driving with the new wheels and tire size.
Handles much better and looks much better in how it fills the wheel well.

    No issues what so ever.

Anybody do this change (go from 19" to 17" wheels), but just get the toyota stock prius 17" wheels for lower cost and simplicity? Assuming they are lower cost, that is ...

Okay, I’m not an engineer so I hesitate to get into this discussion… but I will. I just switched fro XSE 19” wheel to a 17” wheel. I chose a wheel and tire size that was the same circumference as my OEM 19s. So tire went from a 195/50r/19 to a 125/55/17. Both wheel / tire combinations had the same circumference and thus the move to the 17” setup did not bugger up my speedometer and odometer. And I weighed both sets and they were virtually the same weight… and that was hard for me to believe. So the continued assumption that 17s will always be lighter may not be true.

    You mean 225/55/17.

The reason your 17" is the same weight as the stock 19" is because your new wheel and tire are wider. The stock wheels are 17x6.5 and 19x6.5. I'm guessing your new wheel is something like a 17x7.5 or 17x8. And then your new tires are 30mm wider at the sidewall.

If a person switches from 19" to 17" and keeps the width the same, it's almost certain the new setup will be lighter. (Assuming a person doesn't buy a wheel made of cast iron of something. :) )

edit: Looks like you went with Enkei FD-05, so it must be a 17x7.

If 225/55/17, how's the handling and fuel mileage on it?

Toyota USA parts website had a revamp a year or so back, making it near useless. You could phone a dealership parts department to find out the cost (both list and best offer) for the 17" rim. Probably best to be sitting down when you call...

Hello. I have no idea what I'm doing, but I would like to replace my 19in tires with smaller ones to get better fuel economy.
In addition, getting tires that are in stock in many places helps too. 195/50R19 don't exist anywhere around me except at the dealership.

I see many people posting tire sizes in this thread. Is it as easy as just buying new tires (in those posted sizes) and rims that would fit them correctly?
So, can I just contact Costco and say I need four tires in x/yrz size and be on my way?

In my experience at Canadian Costco, and from what I've read as well, they'll only install tires sizes/specs that the car came from the factory with. The one exception might be a tire with a higher speed rating, something like that. But it's definitely got to be a stock size.

My 2 cents: you just spent big bucks on a car, just live with it for a while. It'll take forever to recoup the cost of a slight increase in mpg.

Ditto for the spare tire issue. I wouldn't spend $40K, fully aware there's no spare, then start working on a make$hift remedy.

I found TireRack to be the best option for getting correct wheel and tire sizes that fit our vehicle.
You want to have as close as possible, the same height as OEM. Width is up to you.

I went with wider for better handling and better look

I totally agree. This is more for planning than anything. I'm going to at least wait until the tires wear out. No use throwing away good tires.

I think you answered this already, but have you noticed any increase or decrease in MPG?

    -----
Also I was generally wondering is getting replacement tires in a different size as easy as just popping out the old ones and popping in the new ones? I don't have to really do anything else?

I have not noticed anything significant with MPG. Yes, it's as easy as that. My new wheels came with different lug nits so be aware of that. TireRack does supply them if you order from them

Would you happen to know if it gets more involved if I don't get tires of the same size? I'm trying to chase the MPG(e) dream. Could I even ask the dealership to adjust the speedo?

    Tire Size Calculator

Put your current size and the new tire size you're looking at, it'll give you all the info you need and by how much difference it'll be on the speedo at various speeds. Not sure if the dealer can adjust it or if it's worth it. My speedo on sotck 17" is off by a few percents compared to real speed.

That’s by design; speedometers intentionally read a bit high (in a mostly vain attempt to slow drivers down). The odometer should be relatively accurate though.

20560r17-got tires these exactly match the oem 19 to the mm (not the 215 or 225s for the 17s) with minimum width increase - but now shopping for wheels

I hope this thread is old enough that no one minds the detour.

I like the idea of 16" wheels, and yours look great. How tight was the fit against your brakes?

It occurs to me that Prius V 16" wheels should fit unless they touch the brakes.

Has anyone here fit Prius V wheels to a Gen 5?

FWIW, I fit 15" prius wheels to a Corolla and it was a significant change for the better. The brake clearance was very slight, but the ride improvement wasn't.
