... 30 years ago could you have imagined, Toyota enterprise management, putting themselves in the awkward position, arbitrarily voiding warrantees, on Subaru engines?

No easy task, pulling engines on Subaru's BRZ:

    Explaining the Toyota Reliability 'Crisis'

30 years ago could you imagine Toyota, issuing wholesale Ford-like recalls, on slapdash quality trucks it now builds, in -- Mexico? (!!)

What kind of idiot spends a cool US$50k, on a 3-pot Corolla? Or US$60K, on a rebadged BMW?

Koreans call Japanese 'The Lazy Asians.'

    TIFWIW.

I, for one, was never a big fan of Toyotas' corporate culture ESPECIALLY 30 years ago.
My opinion hasn't changed much over the years.

    Toyota's cars HAVE.

    All things in moderation.
    If you don't work?

    You will die younger.

... never-never-never --- buy a vehicle, coachwork, drivetrain, chassis and power-plant, manufactured, designed and engineered, by a third party (e.g., key emphasis on the word, never):

There’s Now a Class Action Lawsuit Over Toyota GR86, Subaru BRZ Engine Failures

Caught, red handed, bottom end of the mainstream chain of commerce, Toyota is as obliged to honor warranties, as is Subaru. Not a stretch of the imagination, to envision Toyota execs and Subaru people, finger-pointing, bickering over who has to pay.

Things are so bad at Toyota, they no longer know how to build sports cars.

    Yep.
    That's what I thought.

    Supra???

    Where does Toyota rank?

Mazda would have been MY pick.
Perhaps a Subbie if you want something in the 'controversary column.'

Europeans and Americans have always had an LA-NYC sort of rivalry with sports cars AND BOTH are capable of producing fine examples of their respective interpretations of this genre.

I prefer the American interpretation due to my disadvantages of being born where roads are very long, very wide, and mostly pretty straight.
    The formula is pretty straightforward.
    Displacement.
    RWD.
    Point-and-shoot steering.

    The Japanese are fine engineers.
Probably the world's best.....but they can only produce a fantastically realistic photocopy of the original in THIS particular genre - which is a SHAME.

    They're actually pretty GOOD, artistically.

Datsun did up a better XKE, than the Jaguar people could:

Toyota engineered a better 308, than Ferrari (e.g., de tuned Formula Atlantic racing mill, full monocoque, the most adjustable suspension in Toyota history; when Toyota debuted its MR2, Ferrari still did not know how to forge a monocoque):

Toyota designed and engineered a better DB5, than Aston-Martin ever could (e.g., you'll see one on the old Fuji Circuit in the film, "... You Only Live Twice"):

Were I in the market for a performance vehicle? Certainly wouldn't be anything, from Japan -
