Reminds me of: Tragedy of the Commons: Examples & Solutions | HBS Online

The tragedy of the commons refers to a situation in which individuals with access to a public resource—also called a common—act in their own interest and, in doing so, ultimately deplete the resource.

This economic theory was conceptualized in 1833 by British writer William Forster Lloyd. In 1968, the term “tragedy of the commons” was used for the first time by Garret Hardin in Science Magazine.

This theory explains individuals’ tendency to make decisions based on their personal needs, regardless of the negative impact it may have on others. In some cases, an individual’s belief that others won’t act in the best interest of the group can lead them to justify selfish behavior. Potential overuse of a common-pool resource—a hybrid between a public and private good—can also influence individuals to act with their short-term interest in mind, resulting in the use of an unsustainable product and disregard of the harm it could cause to the environment or the general public.

Fish stocks are a current version.

More simple terms, misinformation says climate change always happened, so all is just happening now. Leaving out it is the rate of change due to human influence.
I remember being in a plane climbing out of Tokyo in 1969, the image of the smog making the city disappear is still with me. It’s gotta eventually have some side effects is the simple way to look at it. I don’t need complicated at this stage of existence.

Well then, I guess it's a good thing that we only have 99.9% proof, right? Sure is good the oil companies are working so hard to successfully achieve that 00.1% of uncertainty so they can keep increasing production!

Yeah... There were times on this planet billions of years ago when it was inhospitable to all life other than a small amount of bacteria & fungus that could survive under extreme conditions so no matter how much we kill life on earth, it's still what they like to call "within the range of natural variability." All good, problem solved... Keep counting the money, it's all that matters in life and I guess in death too, right?

...the petrol industry only sells what people buy.

    Me?
I keep my carbon throughput as low as I can - probably lower than most, and I sleep pretty good at night.

    .....and, who knows?
The way things are looking I'll sleep better in about a week. :)

But there were extreme precipitation events that occurred in the 1800s. How do explain these?

"Yet another extreme rainfall worthy of mention is that of August 12, 1891 when the mountain town of Campo, California (located just a few miles north of the Mexico-U.S. border at an elevation of 2,800') reported an amazing 11.50" in 1 hour and 20 minutes (and a 16.10" storm total). The average annual precipitation here is just 14.82" and in August a mere 0.51".

"A severe thunderstorm at Catskill, New York was reported to have dropped at least 10” of rain in one hour on July 16, 1819 according to bucket surveys."

What is the Most Rain to Ever Fall in One Minute or One Hour? | Weather Extremes

In fact, most of the short-term rainfall rate records occurred prior to 1960. So, yes, there is a case that the event in Spain, as bad as it was, is within natural variability.

I encourage you to spend more time reflecting on NOT making light and normalizing the seriousness of the reality we're hurtling towards. At 73 you have more than enough experience to know how often floods happened when you were young compared to today.

It makes you look silly and dismissive when there's been so many astonishing history making floods all around the world in the past half dozen years and if you were way younger and a bit smarter you'd be planning for your future with a much more clear view of how bad its going to get and you would be way less accepting of the corruption of the Fossil Fool industry that captured our governments and makes us pay for their wars so we can make the planet uninhabitable compared to the planet you lived in when you were a kid.

In other words: Stop pretending like there's no consequences to how wrong humanity is right now!

Parts of Spain had "a one year in one day" event, apparently not outside historical range. However this was preceded by a long drought possibly also within historical range. I wonder if such back-to-back extremes are novel in this sense. There have been several.

Purpose of SPR is to stabilize price and availability during times of limited availability including from wars or other disruptions. Secondary purpose is to stabilize markets during times of high availability, to support US production. If this is not so I'd appreciate corrections.

Current SPR stock is low in historic terms. People may dispute whether this has happened because of 'valid' uses, or for less lofty political purposes:

yes they may. and they also may dispute what message it sends about commitment to slowing climate change.

I think that's a bit of sleight-of-hand. SPR predates all efforts to limit fossil carbon burning. To the extent they truly exist, US efforts to limit domestic carbon burning continue independently of SPR goals.

If US develops political will to aggressively and persistently reduce CO2 emissions over time, I'd expect SPR releases to be harmonized with that.

SPR releases are a political cat's paw that beautifully illustrates the folly of 'carbon shaming.'
I could understand and appreciate a 'Pub candidate who SUCKS at economics 101 releasing a half a giga-barrel's worth of oil onto the market - but a Dem?
    Hypocrisy AND economic ineptitude.

I could at least RESPECT a neo-liberal who had the courage of their convictions and looked their constituents in the eye and said:

"YOU'RE %$#@ right gas is $5 a gallon!!! AND if I had MY way it would be $10!!!"

    Moment, NOT met.

    So I looked: https://www.energy.gov/ceser/articles/us-department-energy-announces-new-solicitation-purchase-oil-strategic-petroleum-0

    OCTOBER 28, 2024

    WASHINGTON, D.C.
    — Today, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Petroleum Reserves announced a new solicitation for up to 3 million barrels of oil for delivery to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve’s Bryan Mound site from April 2025 through May 2025. Building on the successful direct purchase strategy that has secured over 55 million barrels, this action is another step in DOE’s plan of action to make consistent solicitations when oil prices are favorable for taxpayers. DOE continues to aim for $79 per barrel or less, significantly lower than the average of about $95 per barrel DOE received for 2022 emergency SPR sales.

To date, DOE has secured over 190 million barrels for the SPR including 140 million in cancelled congressionally mandated sales and the direct purchase of over 55 million barrels of oil for the SPR at an average price of about $76 per barrel. This is nearly $20 per barrel lower than the $95 average sales price for 2022’s emergency sales, meeting the Administration’s commitment to secure a good deal for taxpayers. DOE will continue to evaluate options to refill the SPR while securing a good deal for taxpayers, taking into account planned exchange returns and market developments.
