I took the plunge and removed my dashboard today. My intent is to remove the 11.6" vertically-oriented head unit from my 2017 Prime Premium (non-JBL) and replace it with a landscape Android head unit.

Two main problems I see (so far):
-The head unit faceplate's top air vents do not marry with the internal ducts like I'd hoped. Currently thinking I'll cut off the front half of the internal duct and then duct-tape them together
-The physical control buttons in the landscape faceplate utilize an 8-pin connector (90980-12551, I think) and I'm not seeing a match for that in my dash

Can someone smarter than me help me understand the wiring diagram? It seems to me like there are three wires in an 8-pin connector that must appear elsewhere in another connector(s). For instance, the diagram I found seem to indicate that pin 6 should go to *9 (pin 9?), but pin 9 of what?

I've looked all through the manuals at cardiagn.com but the seemingly relevant connectors there don't seem to exist in my car. I think I could manage finding sources for ignition voltage and GND but I can't seem to find a connector with LIN1 (BE whatever than means) to the CANBUS.

You're probably going to struggle without the full hyperlinked original document from TIS.

I don't have access at the moment myself, but some notes.

The *9 is referring to the note in the corner - "before 2018 production".

The letters are colour codes for the wires - BE = beige, SB = sky blue, LG = light green. (The colours you can see anyway in the colour version of the diagram.)

The "AC Control assembly" should have a single connector because there's no "A" or "B" marking on the connections, only pin numbers. Must be at least an 8-pin connector - other pins might be shown in other diagrams.

But I'd guess that "AC Control assembly" is actually on the mechanical thing with the servos, not the user controls you're messing with. You're probably connected to the other end of that LIN1 wire. But that could be a different colour by the time it reaches you. You need the previous page of that diagram to see where that wire's going.

    Thanks for that.

I bought the 2-day TIS subscription. I'm not finding what I'm after. My current thought is that the relevant signal I need are in the 24-pin or 28-pin connectors to the back of the 11.6" touchscreen. I see several wiring diagrams, but none of them describe how many pins the connectors have. I've tried searching in Library/Service information for keywords like jbl, 11.6 but am not finding connector pinout illustrations.

A/C amplifier assembly (I60, I61, Z1, Z26) Pin 14 seems to be Lin1 but not sure where to find those.

There should be some sort of hyperlinking so you can click on a connection and be taken to an illustration of the actual connector involved. You might need to highlight something in the diagram, then hit the right control button.

All the physical information like connectors, wire harnesses, item locations are off in separate sections from the logical wiring diagrams.

The codes like Z26 are the connector identifiers - wire harness Z, connector 26. The letters in brackets identify the connections to a component. So for that LIN1, it's pin 14 of connection B, which is attached to connector 61 of harness I. You should be able to find connector I61 manually.

But Seeing both ends of that LIN1, you're looking at a connection between two parts of the A/C system. I don't think you've found what you're after, which is the multimedia display.

I was finally able to get the physical A/C buttons working, the last major thing I was worried about. "A/C Control Assembly" does refer to the module at the front of the dash with the physical buttons, though the connector names between the Prius and Prime can be different (F52/I55, for example).

From Toyota TIS, I worked out that the I55 connector's (the missing one I'm having to rebuild from scratch) pinout is this:
    1 GND (Black stripe)
4 ILL+ (White) <--Not required to operate A/C Controls (used for nighttime dimming)
    5 ILL- (Violet) <--""
    6 LIN1 (Beige)
    8 IG+ (Light Green)

Part numbers for 'A/C Control Assembly':
    90980-12910 - Plastic connector
82998-24290 - Female terminal (need 3-5 of these)

Normally, I55 connects to I61 (part of 'A/C Amplifier Assembly') which is two connectors down a narrow gap at the firewall just to the right of the gas pedal.

I checked I61 on my vehicle, and there is no pin where the TIS documentation says it is (Pin 14), accounting for all the trim level variations the docs mention (wire colors SB, BE. Blue/Beige). I mean, TIS doesn't specifically mention that I55 doesn't exist in 2/3 of the Prime trim levels either, so :censored:.

Here's what I've done so far:
    • Purchased a used A/C Control Assembly with the I55 connector still connected (wires cut out of dash)
    • Soldered longer wires to that connector
    • Wired 12V to Pin 8 and GND to pin 1 from the 12V auxiliary power outlet (cig adapter). Temporary for testing
    • Took the wire from Pin 6 and shoved it into the empty Pin 14 of the i61 connector and held it in place by taping it to adjacent wires
The A/C controls started at this point (I was very excited). I also tried plugging the ILL +/- (pin 4, 5) wires into the I34 and I35 connectors (while those connectors were unplugged) for the head unit, and the LCD also dimmed when the headlights were on. Nav 11.6" connector pinout info here with details for I34/I35.

Because LIN1 connection in I61 isn't populated, I earlier went hunting for accessible LIN1 sources from other connectors. I found the Hybrid Vehicle Control ECU connector (Pin 31) behind the glove box. I stripped the blue wire just enough to twist the wire from pin 6 on temporarily, but this didn't work for some reason; A/C controls LCD screen illuminated but buttons didn't respond and no temp was displayed.

I can strip the connectors to the head unit to get everything but the LIN1 connection. Looks like I can get the female terminal (part 82998-47010) from AliExpress which is shipping to me now. I have tried to extract an existing female pin socket from a connector, but it seems impossible without the right Toyota tool. I tried inserting a female terminal for a Raspberry Pi, but it seems about 5%-10% too big.

    Other thoughts:
    • I am curious how the original 11.6" head unit controls the A/C since it doesn't seem to use LIN1. Maybe it uses another type of CAN connection which translates it to LIN elsewhere.
    • I recently noticed the vents on the 11.6" display are removable. Need to revisit that and see if the original vents are still somehow usable
    • This iDoing Android head unit is pretty great. I haven't quite figured out how to mount it properly (used some bail wire looped around some plastic holes on the faceplate for now). I also installed a 8" self-amplified JVC CW-DRA8 "250W" (it's really more like 100W) subwoofer which fits nicely under the passenger seat.
    • I have a TIS subscription til 11/22/24 if someone wants some documentation.
    • Do I even have a Prime Premium anymore?
Big thanks to you, @KMO for the tips which helped me to read the auto wiring diagrams properly.

I looked back at the diagrams posted, and note 5 does say on those wires "w/o 11.6 inch display" so it was saying they wouldn't be there. I missed that fundamental point among all the other details. Had to go back and check that because I found it hard to believe that Toyota would be publishing incorrect documentation.

(If I'd paid attention to that it would have seemed more likely to me that one end of that link was the actual display - I'd got the wrong end of the stick there.)

Unfortunately for modders like you, Toyota are prepared to make dozens of different harness variations for all the options. Which then also means leaving out the connector terminals, because the terminals are soldered to the wires and then inserted into the connector. Grr. But at least extra terminals are easy to source.

There are multiple separate buses in the system, so generally nicking a connection from another similar bus won't work. Overall system is too complex and high-bandwidth for the generally legacy buses to be used as a long multipoint bus as originally intended, so they tend to be used in a more point-to-point fashion, with ECUs acting as relay agents pass on certain messages between buses.

Seems like you're nearly there though with the extra terminal on the way. Just need to add the missing "*5" wire and run it along the original harness. Well done!

Maybe? Just make sure you use the right coloured wires so it's authentic.

Yikes. Looking back at it now, it seems you're correct. There's zero chance I would have correctly interpreted it that way without the benefit of doing the work and later reviewing the docs again. That's an bass-ackward way to say it. Should read "Only with 10 inch display" (or 9in, or whatever it is).

Certainly would have been clearer if the "A/C Control Assembly" itself said "without 11.6 display", making clear that the whole thing was missing, not just a couple of wires... And the other notes could be "with A/C Control Assembly".

I never grasped what was going on from the start - I thought we were looking for a connector on the multimedia display, and hadn't registered that this was about a separate A/C control to go with a smaller display.
