Hi everyone... We've been trying to do a diagnosis on this one for weeks and keep draining the hybrid battery down trying to get it going.

Currently recharging hybrid battery again! Here's the basics:

-- Engine issues/misfire codes, mechanic they met on road trip who looked at it for owner blamed it on bad gas and problem went away for less than a week.

-- Misfire codes and drained hybrid battery got us to recharge it and at 160K miles it didn't seem like spark plugs had been done yet so we replaced those, as well as ignition coils and plugs looked worn out but normal. Then we cleaned mass air flow sensor and throttle body and installed a new 12volt but that didn't resolve the problem.

-- When the engine is being spun by the hybrid battery if you floor the exhaust pedal the engine chokes and gas smell comes out of the exhaust.

-- Next, we replaced mass air flow sensor and still the same problem. Lots of cleaning has been done and no sign of damaged wires or anything out of place.

-- A Prius engine expert thought maybe timing belt skipped a tooth and he said hook it up to Toyota Techstream so we did that and I don't have very many hours of experience with Techstream but no signs of timing issues, just error codes pointing towards mass air flow sensor problems. (see screenshots below)

-- What do we do next?

How long does it take for the pack to drain? Are you seeing correct SOC before and after grid charging?

I'd focus on the pack first and find out why it's discharging and trying to get her engine started is not showing any clues yet. .

OEM pack is fine, it held up for several diagnostic sessions of engine spinning before it was drained down too far. Probably has some diminished capacity and in need of reconditioning to restore it to full capacity at its age... But all signs point to the engine not starting.

Yeah, the P3190 is the only current code, and sadly, all it tells you is the engine's producing less than a fifth of the expected output.

It doesn't say anything more about why, so it requires putting on the old-school gasoline engine diagnostic hat, and running down all the fuel / compression / spark Usual Suspects.

Is that like a coal-roller mod?

Maybe. I am sure it has a discount code.

Only time we pressed the gas pedal was when engine wouldn't start and there were no options and only pressed it for 1/2 a second to confirm that's still a symptom.

If the timing belt skips a notch or there was valve damage there would be more than a P3190 for error codes, correct?

There are codes for the cam timing being wrong, if it's wrong enough for the ECM to notice.

I don't know of any codes specific to damaged valves ... they'd fall under the 'compression' Usual Suspects.

Yep, oh yeah..it wouldn't turn over very much or at all and the valves would be bent. P0016 etc..would probably show up with a bunch of others.

Based on feedback from a couple mechanics I know a bad Mass Air Flow sensor isn't going to entirely prevent the engine from starting... And the theory that timing is off seems like it'd have other error codes? But is there a function in Techstream to check the timing? Or is there old school timing marks on the engine I can check with a timing light?

Could it be an ECM issue?

navigating techstream for the first few times ain't gonna be a walk in the park. Remember the first time in the repair manual? Stick with what ya know best of what stats are supposed to look like form experience while searching out how techstream is organized, than move on to uncharted territories in the software.

Maybe not often, but never say never.

(I just found those by trying to search up the thread I remembered where that happened ... not sure, maybe that was this one.)

Timing lights were more for ignition timing. There are still marks down there and you can check those, but the ECM is in direct control of the ignition timing, so you pretty much never have to.

The ECM only has indirect control of the valve timing: the timing chain has to be on right, and then the ECM has a small range of control using the oil-control valve. So if the chain has jumped, the ECM can't make the timing be right, but can give you a code about it.

You confirm the chain's on right by taking the valve cover off and looking at the marks on the cam sprockets. Details are in lots of threads. Most of those stories involve someone recently doing work where they had the chain off, and it jumped as they were reassembling, before the chain tensioner could do its thing. I haven't seen a lot of stories where this (not belt) chain just skips a tooth out of the blue.

So the latest update is he said he got the engine running briefly with 5 pumps of the gas pedal. But I wasn't there for that and its very difficult to tell the difference between the electric motor spinning the engine and the engine spinning itself. But if true that might bring us back full circle to first mechanic diagnosis of bad gas, or as @V Sport Wagon suggested maybe check fuel pump and fuel filter for issues. And I gotta admit, the smell of gas from the exhaust when it won't starts contradicts that notion, but other than swapping out the ECM it seems that's what we have to look at next.

Just keep in mind the ECU miscom code was history, so that shouldn't be figured in yet. Unless it comes up as pending..or current..then address it. Let us know!

Old cars with carburetors had an accelerator pump joined right to the throttle linkage: any time you pressed the pedal, an extra squirt of fuel went in, so that the sudden inrush of air through the wider throttle opening wouldn't mean a moment of lean mixture just when you wanted go.

You could do other stuff with that too. 'Pumping' the pedal a few times when starting would shoot some extra raw fuel into the manifold, which might help with a cold start. Overdoing that, on the other hand, could 'flood' the engine.

None of that stuff exists on a Prius. Pumping the gas pedal doesn't shoot extra gas in. Heck, it doesn't even open the throttle; only the ECM does that, looking at what you're doing with the pedal for an idea of what you'd like the car to do.

It kinda sounds like whoever the 'he' is has mostly experience from pre-Prius days. (Which isn't a horrible thing, since a P3190 is basically a call for someone with old-school gas engine diagnostic chops. Still, the difference between a carburetor and throttle-by-wire with EFI matters.)

Thanks for the help everyone... Because the original diagnosis by the mechanic was bad gas, we're going to focus on that for a while. Maybe the fuel filter, or the injectors or fuel pump? If anyone has seen symptoms like this and can think of other things we haven't checked, please let us know?
