Generally, for the average consumer, Toyota & Honda are considered far ahead of Ford in reliability & user satisfaction. the average consumer is not driving a sports car, BTW,

Toyota has more experience with "electrified" vehicles though. I believe most of Ford's EVs have not been used long enough to prove reliability.

Lower reliability and satisfaction scores doesn't mean they don't do their own development.

The Prius has its share of issues, some that were serious. Can't mention Honda without the IMA battery issue. Reduced their hybrid rep to the point that they stopped selling them here for a couple years, and had to call the new Civic hybrid the Insight 3.

Toyota had to stop sales of BEVs over wheels, and doesn't make their own EV work van in Europe. Sounds like they will be using BYD for future hybrids and PHEVs.

I have heard some nasty rumors about the sienna Hybrid too. One ogf my coworkers was so disappointed they traded it for a different Toyota.

In my personal opinion, the spurious full screen notifications on the MID on the Gen 4 Prius should have failed roadworthiness due to safety issues. I know when I first drove my 2017 at night, they were dangerously distracting, When you see something full screen you expect it is a serious warning, not just informational. Most of the problematic ones could not be disabled. An indicator light would have been sufficient for many of them.

Or just something that pops up on the mini driver screen. The Subaru doesn't have any warnings concerning the car come up on the big screen.

This was the mini screen but when it is in your line of sight, in the dark and you are not yet familiar with the car, (I was driving over 100 miles home) it becomes VERY distracting!

1st to the patent office? Not exactly.
    history fun facts;
Ford & Toyota's timings & tech were similar enough that they cross licensed rather than sue each other.

    Enter my hero, Alex severinsky
So he won millions, & money per hybrid on the road between Ford & Toyota & Lexus - eventually toyo & ford settling out of court so it would stop all further legal action & appeals. Much of what severinsky invented dealt with the high speed controllers involved with making gas and electricity work in harmony

Don't ya just love it when David Beats goliath?

Maybe Toyota is slow with more EV models because some other stuff's originality doesn't pass the sniff test

Our current only car for me and my wife is 22 Ford Escape PHEV. We've had it for almost two years trouble free. Yeah, I would have bought Rav4 Prime if it was available and at the discounted price with incentives like Escape PHEV. At the time when we wanted consolidate two cars (3 raw SUV Pathfinder Hybrid and commuter friendly gen4 Prius Prime) into one PHEV, it was the only option we had. Rav4 Prime which was not readily available, but ones for sale was almost $15k more than equivalent Escape PHEV.

With my projected low miles on the EV pickup truck, high milage reliability is not very important. It is going to be used as around town light hauler only. Current Ford Maverick Hybrid would be a good choice, but I want a full EV version or at least PHEV version which is quite possible since Escape and Maverick share so much in common.

DIL has a Ford plug in SUV and have not heard anything negative about it. Perhaps 2-3 years old, bought used. Son drives a Tesla MY.

I saw this, that TRW is possibly the originator of the idea in 1971.

The reported story I saw was that Ford went to file their patents, and saw that some could infringe upon some of Toyota's. Rather than waste money in court, they agreed to the cross licensing agreement. Toyota got access to some of Ford's other IP that they had been eying for awhile.

Ford had to see Toyota's patents somewhere first. Most likely among the public filings with the patent office, which doesn't mean Toyota had a patent yet.
