I am currently in the state of Vancouver WA and today I noticed while I was going 35 mph that my odometer said I was going 95 mph. I really don’t know what to do.. I am an older woman and when I go to different auto mechanics, they like to target me because I’m old and I’m alone. I need some information about why Prius hybrid odometer would give me an incorrect reading and what can I do about it? Is it dangerous other than getting a speeding ticket because I don’t know how fast I’m going. any advice would be helpful

No, I am not sure I will check it out. Maybe I hit something with my left knee and it did something. Thank you so much. I will look into it. I am an older lady like I said and I’m just freaking stressed.

    35 mph is just 56 km/h though. 95 km/h is nearly 60 mph.

Get an OBD-II app on a phone and watch the speed indication there? The combination meter should be working from the same data (but displays it inflated by a couple percent), so it would be interesting to see whether the OBD value is also so far off, or is correct and only the combination meter display is wrong.

The value can also be compared to a speed reading on a GPS, which doesn't depend on the car's speed signal at all.

Just editorial: I think you mean speedometer, not odometer.

The first thing that comes to mind is the aforementioned switch from mph (miles per hour) to kmh (kilometers per hour). And as also mentioned, if you were going around 35 mph and the speedometer is reading 95, that's way off for metric, should read something 55 kmh..

How do you know you were going around 35 mph, just felt like it?

I wonder if it could be a defective digital display? Here's 35:

    And 95:

Barring that, here's the mph/kph switch location:

You were absolutely right I had accidently changed it to KM from MPR when I was adjusting the time which is directly under it. Thank you so much!

Ruh roh. If you were doing 95 in km/h, you sure weren't doing 35 in MPH! :D

My mom drove home from out east one year through Canada without switching to km/h, and when she arrived (in pretty good time), she asked "so, when they post the limit is 100, what is that in MPH" and I said "about 62" and she said "oops". :)

A low-cost Garmin will tell you your speed and additionally, the speed limit and has free updates.
